I have "lost" the shortcut / icon to My Computer
which is normally resident on the Desktop.
How can I recover it?

Right-click the desktop, pick Properties. Go to the Desktop tab, pick
Customize Desktop..., put a check mark in the box next to My Computer. If
it's already checked, uncheck it, then recheck it and click on OK.
