Help in what way? If you are wanting to boot back to the failed
configuration then follow the instructions in the article. Your present
control sets at the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Select key are as follows:

Current 0x3
Default 0x3
Failed 0x1
LastKnownGood 0x2

To restore the failed control set change the value data as such:

Current 0x1
Default 0x1
Failed 0x2
LastKnownGood 0x3

If the machine fails to boot after you do this boot again to the LKGC
and it will boot to the control set that you are now using.

Hey John would this work for me? Since my LKGC is messed up, and if I have
to use it again would this work to get my current drivers working. I also
use ERUNT, so if I use the LKGC to boot the machine then go and run the
backup of one of those would that fix things? Now my question, I have the
backups for ERUNT in the windows directory, even though I used LKGC those
files won't be touched? The files will be the same ones before the pc
wouldn't boot, or do I need to move the backups on one of my other
partitions? Thanks

Re: LKGC question update 8-30

Also rebuilding from scratch would be more of a headache for me than dealing
with some drivers not loading. Why does starting from scratch always have
to be a final solution? There has to be ways to work around problems rather
than format and start over. Formatting also decreases your hard drive
performance and too much formatting can damage your hard drive.

Other than marking the LKGC changes in the System hive booting to the
LKGC doesn't change any files on the computer. Your machine is borked
and you are trying to avoid the inevitable by bodging things together...

Re: LKGC question update 8-30

From looking at the large volume of posts without any resolution, you
gave me the impression you were experiencing a considerable amount of
agggravation. Perhaps I shouldn't have assumed that; perhaps you see
this as more of a learning exercise.

That being said, you would no longer be experiencing this issue had you
bitten the bullet and performed a Clean Install. I still think John's
suggestion is a valid one.

What exactly is your PC's problem? This thread is not easy to follow! It
seemed you were mucking around in the Windows folder and didn't like
what you saw. But are there any actual performance issues? Which drivers
are not loading?

Where did you get this idea that "too much formatting can damage your
hard drive"?

Re: LKGC question update 8-30

Can you verify the ReportBootOk value at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Is the value present and is it set to 1?

John

So using one of the backup registry files from the ERUNT folder will help
with the missing drivers that LKGC isn't loading

Re: LKGC question update 8-30

Daave, my problem is my LKGC. It's the same configuration as it was over a
year ago. It's not working right. Most of my drivers are non existent like
my ATI graphics, printers, avg antivirus, etc. I wanted to know instead of
doing a clean install would using the LKGC and then using a registry backup
from the ERUNT folder get my missing drivers back that LKGC isn't loading.

The tech guy where I get my pc worked on sometimes told me about the
formatting.

That is how it's supposed to be, a value of zero would disable the
creation of the LKGC control set. The problem isn't there...

I have no way of knowing what you have backed up with ERUNT and how it
will work if you restore old system hives. In no uncertain terms I
think that you are kicking a dead horse...

Re: LKGC question update 8-30

I haven't been following all of this, but just wanted to make a general
suggestion:
Why don't you try it? First make a current backup using ERUNT, then try
the older one, and if no joy, restore the previously made ERUNT backup?
But keep in mind if the older ERUNT backup does work as far as your drivers
are concerned, you're still stuck with the system files as of that date
(anything installed since then would need to be reinstalled, etc, etc).
