Linux?? Is it some kind of a joke? Just tried 3 different versions. They all sucked.

Today I decided to try some of the newer versions of Linux since I hadn't
used any Linux since the summer. I tried Ubuntu 9.10, Fedora and OpenSuse
with add on DVD, latest versions of all.

God does Linux suck!
Just some of the problems encountered:

No sound.
No printing.
My 6 button tilt/scroll mouse was turned into a 2 button generic mouse.
Couldn't get dual LCD displays working with an ATI card no matter what I
did.
Doesn't play some movies or music files.
Clobbered my iPod library, luck I had it backed up because I don't trust
Linux.
It's slow as shit even on an Intel I7 with 8g and a WD Raptor drive.
I get screen repaint problems, applications just disappear from the screen
while running with no indication as to why they exploded.
What a friggin mess Linux is.
Ubuntu looks like someone shit in a pine tree.
WTF? Shit brown. Well at least someone has a sense of humour.
Fedora almost destroyed my Windows partition.
Opensuse looks real nice, but who can figure out how to add software?
That Yast thing has to be the worst package manager on earth.
Linux has progressed but Windows 7 is far superior.
Why on earth anyone would want to use Linux as a desktop system is a mystery
to me.
It sucks.

Why yes it does. Millions have tried Linux/Ubuntu and have removed it from
their PCs. Garbage is garbage.

That's normal for Linux.

You can print but it takes time to find the right drivers.

Wow - 2 button generic mouse? Pretty good for Linux.

That's about right.

What do you expect from an OS that is written by geeks for geeks?

Most don't trust Linux.

Alias says they have a great spinning cube. That is Ubuntu's claim to fame.
A spinning cube.

Try unmuting it.
Even X-Fi cards work now.

What?
Did you configure a printer?

ATI sucks.

Install the required packages.
Can take some reading ... but SUSE is pretty easy.

I don't trust iPods.

ubuntards like it.

It does look nice.
Yast_Software_Software Management.

Then use zypper.
Actually, Yast is pretty darn organized.

Then don't use it.
Trying 3 distros in one day would strain the nerves of most people.

Of course Linux sucks. Every modern OS sucks - just think about how far
the hardware has come in 30 years - now compare to how far the software
has come. Certainly Linux sucks - Fortunately for me, it sucks much less
than MS. It works.

and I could list a plethora of problems I had with the Windows platform
(hence my preference for Linux)

Does your experiences allow a damnation of the product as a whole? - of
course not. (just like mine don't regarding Windows)

What I'd suggest is, if you really do want to run Linux you spend some
time correcting the problem. If you don't then continue using Windows.

This is just like DFS and his attempts to "prove" that Linux is not a
viable alternative and until you can find a technology with no issues at
all then really its all a bit silly.

The issue of advocacy comes down to personal choice.

Quote "Why on earth anyone would want to use Linux as a desktop system
is a mystery to me."

Yes strange isnt it? So either there are loads of people using a system
that doesnt work and then telling lies or maybe, just maybe your
experience in not typical.

I'll let common sense prevail here.

Funny, I just installed PCLOS 2009 (gnome) on an older machine for a
friend, and everything is working fine. The interface is beautiful and
modern, and is reasonably responsive on this 6-year-old machine (P4 3.0).

You gotta wonder about these lying losers who claim that nothing works
for them.

I may have to buy a new PC (no os or software installed) that has at
least a quad core Intel. I'm beginning to think that virtual machines
will never do any justice to Linux. It won't even do justice for
Solaris using their own virtual machine!

So far, in the last year, I've managed to write code and scripts from
the classic X books to get mwm and fvwm to work independently from
Quartz by logging into >console at the OS X login prompt. Brings back
the old days of the 90s with redhat 5.2.

I use both and have problems with both.

On Win 7 side:

- Windows Explorer continues to be slow and to senselessly
wait on networked input before allowing access to a *local*
resource.
- Menu delays of seconds still happen. This problem harks
back to Win XP.
- The enumeration and display of USB devices continues to
be problematic, especially in conjunction with Windows
Explorer. This harks back to Win 2000.
- The GUI is nicer, but still a bit klunky looking, and
difficult to customize.
- You have to go to a third party to find virtual desktops,
and the quality is uneven.
- Updates can alter behavior in undesired ways.

On the Linux side (Debian):

- Much less vendor support. The community cannot make up for
*everything*. This covers a lot of issues that I won't
break out; hardware and software.
- Updates can alter behavior in undesired ways.

Now, it should be obvious that *I* prefer Linux. However, over the years
I have seen how many people get used to Windows and like it, and feel
uncomfortably when they try Linux, even with easy-to-use systems like
Ubuntu. So I've learned to accept that, and I don't castigate them for it.

As long as people don't put roadblocks up in *my* usage of Linux, I am
happy. I work as a Windows (with some Linux) programmer, in part, and
I use Linux for just about everything, including writing and testing Windows
code. And, when I need strict Windows compatibility, I run it (XP)
in a virtual machine. That way, I have fun while doing the stuff I have to
do.

And yet you post stupid links all the do da day in Windows groups.
Usually critical of MS.
I don't see you posting the same BS in Linux groups.

So you do seem to have a problem with one.

You use Windows 7?
I thought authentication was against your religion.
