Running XP-Home
Latest security updates (2/10/2010) failed to install and all of them (when
expanded locally) read "0 Kb" file size. i tried re-downloading and got same
failed installation message almost instantly, and again 0 KB file sizes
(presumably to do with each patch somehow reset to zero Kb?? )
KB975713
KB978037
KB977165
KB078251
KB975560
ActiveX Killbits for Windows XP
KB978262
KB977914
KB971468
KB979706
Mal Soft Removal tool (feb 10) KB890830

All of the above were of file size 0 Kilobytes.

Other symptoms (XP Home) >> slower shut down++

IE 8.06001.18702 >> Tools\ Internet Options \ Browsing history \delete
button >> i note in the list that the "FORM" radio button is now repeatedly
being unchecked. This has happened several times in recent days, and I
defeinitley had form data set to be deleted. It's somehow being unchecked in
the background, maybe either prior, during, or after using IE8, or ? during
shut down or start up.

Other Windows updates (set to auto) have been installing fine up until now.

Recently have updated Flash Player from Adobe.com

Any help would be appreciated!!
thanx in advance for any help to resolve this! Thanx again

0kb is how much you need to download, not install. You've already
downloaded them.

How do I reset Windows Update components?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

.... and click on the "Microsoft Fix it" icon. When asked, select "RUN",
both times. Check the "I agree" box and click on "Next". Check the box
for "Run aggressive options (not recommended)" and click "Next". Let
it finish up and follow the prompts until it is done. Close/exit and
reboot when it is.

It is conceivable that the updates are/were being regulated and the OP's
system was in a queue to download them. I wouldn't be so quick to
recommend resetting the Updating components since the queue information
is stored in one of the files that will be deleted during the reset
operation.
The system will then be pushed back in the queue line and have to wait
longer to automatically download them.
Just wait a day and they should start downloading.
