Does this stuff work? What if the thief wipes the hd and reloads
an os? What is the best way, software, pcmcia hardcard, other
bells and whistles?

If I was to steal your notebook, the first thing I would do would see if
there is a factory-installed recovery partition and use it to wipe your hard
drive and bring it back to factory condition. So much for the software.
I believe there are some that have anti-theft devices built into an on-board
chip that would prevent anyone from doing that, but if you ever forget your
password, you have to buy a new motherboard. IBM, maybe?
