Laptop and an external monitor set up as dual monitor?

ISTM that I've heard of a laptop and an ext monitor set up as
independent views on what I assume is a big virtual desktop. I've got
a new laptop and my trying to get his running. I can get the same
view on the laptop and the VGA-connected monitor but I can't find a
clue about how to get different views.

Did I mis-hear?

FWIW it's W/7 on a Dell Inspiron laptop. The monitor model is
recognized by W/7 PnP and can show lots more pixels than the laptop
screen can.

bit of kit I ever bought...

It might depend more on your video card and its drivers than anything else.

If you can't track it down in your video setup menus, click on help or go
to the video card maker's site.

Or even consider posting what your video hardware is and maybe someone here
can help.

1. plug your monitor into the vga connector and turn it on.
2. Right click on the desktop and select screen resolution.
3. Select the display listbox and drop it down to see if it recognizes 2
monitors.
4. If it doesn't go to http://support.dell.com and put in your service code
in the drivers and downloads sections.
5. Find the correct video driver for your card.
6. After the reboot do steps 2-3 again.
7. in the display listbox you should see both monitors and some choices on
what to do.
8. Select the 2nd monitor and select extend my desktop to this monitor.
