Jpeg files that assioiate themselves with Adobe Reader

G

Flightless Bird
Has anyone come across this problem?:
My husband's computer (Vista)has lost the ability to open a saved jpeg file.
He double-clicks on the file which should open the jpeg in Paint, but
instead Adobe Reader opens, with the following error message:

"Adobe Reader could not open 'xxxx.jpg', because it's either not a supported
file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as
en email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)."

Jpeg files are associated with Paint.

I have again associated the files with Paint, via Open With, but it reverts
back to a double-click on a jpeg opens Adobe Reader, not Paint.
It's a mystery.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

"open with" applies to only that incident, not all future associations.
Right click on a jpeg and go to properties/change and select the program
you want to permanently associate with that file extension and make sure
you have a check mark in "Always use the selected program to open this
kind of file".

This is on my husband's computer Trev. No Corel products there.
As it is, it's a special privilege that I am allowed to even touch it!
Meaning, he's stuck .. if all else fails ask the wife ;-)
I couldn't find anything via Google.

That's what I have done (as described in the original message) , but hubby
says it reverts back to opening with Adobe Reader.

Try the jpeg fix from this site, it's a reg file to reset defaults.
Then associate the jpeg with your Paint program.

If you look at the reg file you can see where the user choice is stored:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.jpeg\UserChoice
If it happens again (or happens with another file type) have a look at that key.
If it doesn't look right, delete it (or rename it).
It gets re-written by the 'Open with' and 'Choose default program.....' dialog box.
