I have Tiscali Broadband with a modem connected by USB. Someone told be
that it may not be compatible with Win7. Anyone using such a setup?

Ridiculous. An ISP doesn't know or care what operating system you are
using.

The ISP itself will be fine (as it's just a network connection) but the real
question is... If you're using the USB connection to your modem, are there
USB drivers for that modem. That will all depend on the make/model of the
modem.

Or, does your modem also have an Ethernet connection? All that I have seen
do. Use that and all your compatibility worries (at least in regards to
Win7/Internet access) disappear.

Perhaps except when it's a USB modem that requires drivers?

A number of the more "popular" ISPs in the UK supply a CD with software on
it to go with their particular brand of USB modem.....many people don't even
realise you don't need it...

Then the modem doesn't have drivers for Win7. I was only looking at it
from the other direction.

Mine is a Sagem external modem and it has ADSL and PWR over the two
leds, respectively.

No model number? Maybe on a label somewhere?

Or as asked previously, no Ethernet to use instead of USB?

Modem has a checkout type label thereon with words Sagem Fast TM 800E3.
I cannot see an Ethernet connection or cable and there has been no
mention of it. Have you seen my earlier post about Tiscali offering to
send me a Wireless Router because my modem is not compatible with Win7.

Try for a driver here
http://support.sagem-communications.com/site/modele_fax.php?page=driver&prd=SAGEMF@st800/840&pays=uk

The modem only has USB, no ethernet connection, so you will probably need
the driver. It says it's for Vista, but who knows? I have a few Vista
drivers still on my Win7 notebook, and I haven't had to use compatibility
mode yet (KOW!).

They must be offering you a modem/wifi router combo device, else it's
useless. It won't connect via USB to the modem, and you say the modem
has no ethernet port.

In the future, don't get stuck with a USB modem . . . it's a sucky way
to connect. There are modem/router/wifi devices if you want it all in
one package, but I wouldn't go that way either.

Best to get an ethernet modem that connects to your cable or DSL, and
connect a wifi/ethernet router to that. And there should never be a
reason to install software in order to connect to your cable or DSL
modem . . . you don't need it, you don't want it. Everything you need
to connect via ethernet or wifi comes with the OS or the wifi card
driver. "Cox Connecion Master" or whatever they push on you gives you
nothing.

Yeah, I'd asked about Ethernet earlier. But if it doesn't have it, then that
won't help.

Here is a driver that is for Vista and Vista-64 so there is a good chance it
will work as many drivers are cross-compatible.

Yes, saw you say they would send you one, but it required either $ up front
or a commitment. You still exploring making your current one work indicates
that you would still like this rather than the options your ISP has offered.

1) If one component fails, you have to replace everything.

2) You're stuck with whatever security and firewall capabilities
come with the device rather than buy one that matches your
needs.

3) You're stuck with the range that comes with the device, rather
than selecting a wifi router with better range. Same with speed.

Eh? Ever heard of research before purchasing? Do you normally but things

Then again, RESEARCH before purchasing. Simple.

Yes, but the OP is in the position of getting something sent to him by
his ISP in return for a 12 month commitment. He doesn't have that
choice, he doesn't even know what they'll send.

>> 3) You're stuck with the range that comes with the device, rather

Again, that's exactly my point. In this case, he gets what his ISP
sends. That's why he should research, then buy the best components for
his needs. He might be stuck with the ISPs choice of a modem, but as
long as that has an ethernet connection, he needn't be stuck with their
choice of a wifi router. If he takes their combo unit, he is, and I
expect he'll regret it.

So I guess we agree, eh?

I (OS) am still researching. Today I asked Tiscali Cancellations for a
Migration Code and after some debate they reduced my monthly £14.67 to
£7.99 with a free run for the first three months and they are sending me
a free wireless router to eventually connect to Win7. I accepted that
offer as my wife and I would like to retain our e-mail addresses and in
any case I have been with Tiscali (Lineone ect) for about ten years and
have found them to be quite good. Now TalkTalk have the administrative
side of their business, and although I have the latter for land line I
do not want them for broadband.

If you're happy with their service, great but I'm not sure how a wifi
router will solve your problem if you will still be trying to use the
same USB modem. It just won't plug into a standard wifi router. That's
why a modem that you connet to via ethernet is the best choice. that way
you can connect a computer directly to that ethernet port, or a router,
or a wifi router. I hope it has a modem built in.
