Yes, that works really well. Silly me; I had been concentrating in the
wrong areas of that page, but I will brush-up on that. Thanks Ophelia.

It's probably a Good Thing if he can't rename a folder and create the GodMode one.
Can you imagine what damage he'd do if let loose with all those options!

Dave-UK,

I got that and I am very pleased, to say the least, because the site offers
so much help to persons like me who have just started with Win7 after nearly
ten years solid with Win98 SE. Where I was going wrong was clicking the data
below the icon rather than on the icon itself and when I did the latter and
the icon lit up hey ho Bingo; happy bunny. I am sure that you are pleased
that your patience paid off and I thank you a lot.

You are definitely over-reacting here- which I see as not
characteristic of you, in my travels in this ng.

Emrys Davies has been posting here for a while, and asks genuine
questions of genuine concern to him. And answers the responders, BTW.
And is always courteous.

Disclaimer: Not knowing much about Welsh names, I've just assumed that
Emrys is masculine.

Gene, I am pleased you wrote that, because I have never seen Dave as
anything but helpful and indeed, he has helped me a lot. I just assumed he
knew something I didn't. Certainly, I know less than most:)

Hopefully, Emrys will find the things he needs here:)

Amazing, isn't it? Several people here, and a web-site, tell you how
to create a folder and give it a name and you still somehow can't do it.
Have you never renamed anything during your ten years with Win98?
It's only when somebody tells you to fuck off that you finally see
the light and are suddenly able to do it.

You started this thread by asking if being locked out of your computer was
normal and on being told to reset your screensaver you changed it from
one minute to three minutes.
Quote:
" Thanks for that. It was on one minute and I have changed it to three
minutes. Easy now that I know that the change is possible."

Once again I ask the obvious question , in all of your ten years with
Win98 have you never adjusted the screensaver timeout?

You follow the pattern of a lot of trolls on these newsgroups, asking vague
questions to keep a thread going,
Quote:
"Ophelia, I find the search facility most helpful particularly if I use words
like 'Create', 'Recovery' or 'Search', but is there a list/index hidden
somewhere which itemizes the main eventualities or am I expecting too much?"

What the fuck are "the main eventualities"?

And you answer,
Quote:
"It would be a ready made all in one alphabetical index which would guide me
to whatever programmes are available, such as Repair Disc, Recovery Disc
Creation (which I have found) and many others, but I think that I may be
asking too much. It just crossed my mind that I may be missing something."

Most sensible people call that the Start menu. Didn't your Win98 have such
a list and wasn't it called the Start menu?

Then GodMode folders appears in the thread giving you the opportunity
for more confusing questions.
I tell you what to do and you reply,
Quote:
" Done that and when I open the folder I get this in the address bar:
GodMode{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} Not sure that this is correct.
What do you think."

By removing the full stop from the name you hoped to prolong the confusion
and the thread. If you had copied/pasted the name then there is no way the
full stop would be missing.
You are a troll and a time waster and I look forward to your next thread
with interest.

..

In the Microsoft groups, like microsoft.public.windows.vista.general, you got
posters who were able to post a question just by clicking on the Microsoft
Communities button (or whatever it's called) in Windows Mail.
They didn't have to know about Usenet or newsgroups or the option of paying
for a reliable news server or anything like that.
Consequently there were questions from complete beginners along the lines of:
'How do I stop my computer? I can only see a Start button.'

But this is a proper newsgroup where people have to get several things in place
in order to post. First they have to know that newsgroups exist.
Then they have to know how to access newsgroups via a reader of some sort.
Then they have to find a free server that allows posting or pay for an account
with somebody.
All this tends to weed out the complete novices.
That's why I am sceptical when somebody comes on here asking stupid, vague questions.
And I am even more sceptical when, after multiple answers by several people, the
poster continues to prevaricate.
Then, when confronted, all becomes clear and the thread can be closed with the OP
finally happy, until the next time.

"Where I was going wrong was clicking the data
below the icon rather than on the icon itself and when I did the latter and
the icon lit up hey ho Bingo; happy bunny"

Does this explanation make any sense to you, considering it came from somebody
claiming ten years of Windows experience?

FWIW, I was thinking exactly the same thing, so from my perspective
you weren't out of line.

My brother has been using Windows since the Win95 days and just
figured out a year ago that he could drag and drop files in Windows
Explorer by using the RIGHT mouse button rather than the left, so it's
definitely possible that 10+ years of Windows experience can still
leave gaping holes, however my brother will likely never find himself
posting on a Usenet newsgroup. That, to me, is the big difference.

Yes, of course trolls exist, and they act as you say.

I claim that Emrys is not one of those. Instead, he seems (to me) to have
trouble understanding things that for you and me are easy. I too have
trouble being patient dealing with that, but in this situation, patience
*is* called for, IMO. Thus my reply to you, but I'm thinking of Char
Jackson too, who said in this thread "it's definitely possible that 10+
years of Windows experience can still leave gaping holes".

Referring to the rest of what Char said: in this case, the subject of this
discourse *is* posting - and not even from vBulletin USENET gateway...

Years ago, I first heard the cliche "He doesn't have ten years experience -
he has one year ten times over".

Anyway, I prefer in this case to give Emrys the benefit of the doubt, and I
also accept that YMMV.
