I am running Mozilla Firefox but every so often up pops Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer is not creating the advertisements. Your computer is
probably infected with adware. Another possible source for these ads is
malicious or hijacked web servers.

Your need to scan your computer thoroughly for adware, which may mean
using multiple malware detectors.

If a malicious or hijacked web server is sending these ads, /do not
click on them./ Instead, close them from Task Manager. If you find that
these advertisements appear when you visit a particular website, /do not
visit that website./

Windows version? Why not get rid of the hijackware causing the adverts
(and, no doubt, other problems) instead?

[OK, we'll bottom-post despite the fact that I top-posted my reply...]

Why hasn't SP3 been installed by now? Is the computer otherwise
fully-patched at Windows Update?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed ___?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?
