=============================
?What did you expect Ctrl+B to do?

On an IE screen it should open the Organize Favorites window.

On an open text document it should toggle selected text between
regular and bold.

Why are you using CTRL+B in, e.g., My Documents folder?

What happens when you use CTRL+B in IE8?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE8?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Load IE. Hit the F1 key to open the help. Search on "shortcuts". Click on
the "Using Internet Explorer keyboard shortcuts". Scroll down to "Working
with feeds, history, and favorites". Expand that section. Notice what
Ctrl+B is used for, which is:

Open the Organize Favorites dialog box

You thought there were Favorites listings for a *folder* in your file
system?

Now go load IE. Doesn't matter if you open to a blank page, tabs page, or a
web site. Hit Ctrl+B and notice the dialog that opens. Yep, it's the
dialog to organize your Favorites list of shortcuts.

I believe that the OP has noticed (as have I) that Ctrl+B, when invoked
in a Windows Explorer window (not an IE window) results in the opening
of a blank window. The window has a small IE symbol in the upper left
corner. See a screenshot at the link below. I think the OP is just
wondering if this is a bug. It does appear to be, albeit a harmless one.

That's just what it does...is it a bug? Who knows?
It's not something you would normally do anyway.

The solution is to not do Ctrl+B in a Windows Explorer window if the
behavior bothers you. Why do you feel the need to prevent it from happening?

Don't use the key combination Ctrl+B in a Windows Exporer window

Seems pretty straightforward.

CTRL + B in Windows Explorer gives me the Organize Favorites dialog.

I get that only when IE is open and has focus. If a Windows Explorer
window has focus I get the blank page.

Than only works in Internet Explorer, not in Windows Explorer.
MS's naming choices suck

Explorer, Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer, Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows XP, Office XP, etc.
Designed to confuse us old farts.

It's a bug and it's not. Because Microsoft has so closely tied IE into
Windows, here is an example where a shortcut key for IE "leaks out" for when
it isn't appropriate in Windows Explorer.

While in Windows Explorer, hit the F1 key and search its help on
"shortcuts". Windows Explorer uses the same generic set of shortcuts as
Windows. Select the "Windows keyboard shortcuts overview" article in the
help. There is no Ctrl+B shortcut defined for Windows Explorer so it is
unclear why this key combination so annoys you.

There are utilities (that you will have to install) that let you [re]define
keyboard shortcuts. I haven't used them so I have none to suggest. You
would basically be using software to intercept keyboard scan codes to insert
your own definition.

No, it works in Explorer also, independent of whether I have IE open or not.

I have to amend my previous reply. My statement referred to my SO's PC- hers
brought up the Organize Favorites window in Explorer and in IE. My PC brings
up the blank window in Explorer, but the Organize Favorites window in IE.
The only difference is she's running IE7 and I recently installed IE8 on
mine.

I'm putting my two cents in, I usually don't do this, but the last few
replies in this string bother me. Why post to something with remarks/answers
similar to "if it bothers you, don't do it" or the best from a MS MVP
<Patient (demonstrating): "Doctor, it hurts when I do this!" Doctor: "Don't
do that." Don't do that.> That's insulting to the original poster (yes, I'm
assuming) and to myself. Anyway, there's my two cents, short of a nickel's
worth.

With the exception of VanguardLH: <"It's a bug and it's not. Because
Microsoft has so closely tied IE intoWindows, here is an example where a
shortcut key for IE "leaks out" for when it isn't appropriate in Windows
Explorer."> being the closes answer to the original question.

I respond to Andrei with, yes it must be a bug. As I've tried this on
different pc's with different IE's and I get a different results with OS's
with IE7 or less. Interesting find.

Cheers
