I have XP.

I do not have "Hide extensions..." clicked.

When I open a folder containing .lnk and .pif files the extensions do not
show.

Other extensions in the folder do show,

How come?

Thanks

By design, you will only see them in the command line listing. They are
both "shortcut" files for the GUI.

It is possible to un-hide those extensions by editing the registry, but
then they're also un-hidden on the desktop and in the Start menu, which is
very ugly.
