IE8 will wipe out all your restore points and printer drivers.

If you use the "Repair Existing Installation" from the original install disk it will
do that. It will also result in some other odd behavior from some programs. Have
you, perchance, tried that sledgehammer approach to troubleshooting your problem?

Otherwise I would suspect a virus or malware.
