IE8 Will Not Open in Windows 7

I purchased a new PC shortly before Windows 7 was launched. I was able to
purchase a disk from the PC manufacturer allowing me to upgrade when Windows
7 was released.

I have an IE icon in the task bar but wheh I click it, the hour glass
appears fro a few seconds and vanishes. I have scoured for information
including open IE with no add ons, creating a new icon etc but nothing works
and it will not open. Any ideas please.

Does it open in no add-ons mode?

I had a similar (but different) issue with IE8 and Win7 recently.

My ISP offers an Internet Security Suite that I use on all of my machines,
so I loaded it to the new Win7 machine. After loading it, I could not open
IE8. IE would come up partially and then hang, eventually showing the Could
Not Connect dialog. Turns out the ISS had a module that was holding up the
show.

My ISP has teamed up (much to my disdain) with McAfee, and the McAfee Family
Protection Service had to be Uninstalled to regain control of my machine.

No, it will not open in no add-ons. Tried that thanks.

That sounds familiar. Are you with Sky. I have Mcafee supplied by Sky.
Thanks very much.

No, Verizon FiOS.

If you loaded the ISS from McAfee then found that the browser doesn't work,
take a look at the Add&Remove Programs (that's not the name under Win7) and
see if there is a Family Protection Service with McAfee as the provider. If
there is, Uninstall it.

Something I found is that if I set the homepage to ABOUT.BLANK, then IE
would come up. I could not navigate to a URL, but IE would open. A browser
that can't navigate isn't very useful, but the test might help.

Type ABOUT.BLANK into the Address Box and see if IE finishes opening. I
noticed that Help>About was grayed out until I set IE to a blank page, then
it was colorized and I could select it.

When you start Internet Explorer, it opens, flashes, and then closes
immediately:

HOW TO Reset Internet Explorer settings:

Did a McAfee or Norton free trial come preinstalled on the computer when you
bought it?

OT here but see the Answer post by OnyXxL in this thread if you have
problems opening a link in a new tab or IE window:

I've just contacted McAfee and somebody in India or somewhere hadn't got a
clue. He was hopeless. I will try your suggestion. Cheers.

Jeff and all, cracked it thanks. It is McAfee Security Centre. I
uninstalled it and Internet Explorer opened straight away. Thanks everyone,
you're most kind.

Proves me right, having McAfee provide security services is like paying the
mob for protection from the street thugs.

And your anti-virus application now is...?

Did a McAfee or Norton free trial come preinstalled on the computer when you
bought it?

Assuming you want to use the McAfee app, try this:

1. Download the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool, saving it to your
desktop:
http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

2. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar).

3. Right-click on the file you saved in #1 above and select Run as
Administrator to run the utility. Don't TOUCH your keyboard until the run
completes, then reboot.

4. Download/install McAfee Security Centre.

5. Manually & repeatedly update the McAfee app until you get a "no more
updates" prompt.
