IE8 Security Update Problem

S

Saetana

Flightless Bird
Since the IE security update this week (I have IE8) I cannot click on any
drop-down boxes on any webpage (such as the one to select which discussion
group to post in contained in this "New Question" popup), it just freezes and
then crashes the browser (hourglass appears followed by "Internet Explorer
must close" box). This is happening with all dropdown boxes on all websites
(and surveys) I have tried in the last couple of days.

I cannot be sure that it is due to the latest security update but there were
no problems of this kind before. Any suggestions on how to fix would be much
appreciated, failing which how can I get rid of the security update until
they fix it? I am running Windows XP with SP3.

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB978207).

LOOK! => If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE
(e.g., KB978207), call the above number and ask to be transferred to the
Consumer IE7 queue (which is 47830).

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

Or you can...

Thanks for the advice - I tried to raise a support case online (I live in the
UK) but, would you believe it, there is a dropdown box at the end of the form
to put in my OS which I cannot click on and it will not accept my support
case without using the box.

From looking at the forum it seems there have been a few problems as a
result of this update - any idea how I can uninstall it for the time being?

I believe there's a UK phone number for such support but it may not be a
100% toll-free call (unless you call using VOIP). Can you open the email
support case using another computer?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE8?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

I've found the UK number for problems, although it doesn't seem to be
specifically for these kind of issues. I only started having this problem
since installing IE Security Update KB978207, I installed IE8 months ago and
have had no problems until this week. I am running Threatfire and Windows
Firewall in real time, other spyware/anti virus scans done on demand each
week but not running in the background, I've never encountered any problems
with Threatfire and installations of any kind (although given that my updates
install when the computer is shutting down Threatfire and the firewall may
not have been running in any event).

I have discovered I can sometimes get into the dropdown boxes by using the
Tab key and the up/down arrows to select, but this does not always work.

And my question about Norton and/or McAfee applications...?

The Consumer Security Support home page includes links for free security
update support, too

No, Norton and/or McAfee antivirus have never been on my PC, I
reformatted several months ago and since then have only run Windows
Firewall and Threatfire in realtime with a couple of on-demand malware
scanners for weekly use.

I finally got a support case sorted and they suggested checking the
knowledge base or raising a question on the forum, both of which I had
already done beforehand so that was a waste of time. They also gave
me the (not toll-free unfortunately) number for the UK, which I also
had already acquired myself. I am reluctant to use this except as a
last resort as 0844 numbers in the UK are terrible for minutes and
minutes of recorded messages directing one this way and that before
finally (and not always then if it is busy) getting to speak to a
human being.

Is there any way of uninstalling this update?

Thanks for the link, I have downloaded the zip file and plan to
attempt a repair in the next couple of days. I'll post to advise
whether it works or not afterwards.
