IE8 - no "open link in new tab" option

R

I just updated to IE8 (as IE7 was giving me some trouble) but when I
right-click a link there is no option avaliable to "open link in new tab".
Help ?

I have tried reregistering one of the registry files that some forums say is
behind the reason for this problem, but to no avail. However, I think it
might be a compatability issue somewhere, as when I turn off add-ons the
option reappears. Any suggestions as to what to do ? As manually trying
each add-on is going to take forever !

This is really annoying me, as I use the new tabs option all the time whilst
working !

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Oh, and my computer is running Windows Vista, if that helps !

Turn off all add-ons. Then turn on each one at a time until you find out
which one is removing that context menu option. Then check to see if there's
an updated version of that add-on that doesn't do it, or else just disable
it. You've already identified that it's not IE8 itself that is doing this,
it's a 3rd party add-on that is removing the option.

You need to fix whatever problems you are having in IE 7 /before/ you
upgrade to IE 8.

Upgrading Internet Explorer almost never solves problems you are having
with a previous version of the browser. (If you want to see what
problems IE 8 does fix, read the IE 8 Release Notes.)

I suggest you remove IE 8, which automatically restores your
pre-existing version of Internet Explorer, fix whatever problems, and
then upgrade Windows to IE 8. Follow these steps:

"How do I uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8?"

Just noticed that you said manually trying each one is going to take
"forever" - how many add-ons do you have??? If you have a lot there could
even be a compatibility issue between 2 or more add-ons. Get rid of all the
ones you don't need - it's highly unlikely you have need of more than 4 or 5
at most.

Thanks Dan.

I had no idea before today that it was possible to modify add-ons like that
(or maybe the option is just easier to find in IE8?!) Anyway, I had no idea
I had so many until I looked, and the reason I said it might take "forever"
is yes, because of the sheer number and that I thought it might be a
combination.

But in the event, it turns out it was easier to fix than it might have been.
Turns out the problem was from a program called "Burn for free", which is
the DVD burning software I use. It's freeware, and quite old (though it
still works well and is easy to use - which suits me), but when you install
it it insists on adding a browser plug-in, which I never knew how to remove
until today. As to your first suggestion, in the lack of less time-consuming
advice, I turned off all add-ons then turned them back on in selected groups
to see if the problem reappeared. I luckily tried this one fairly early on
as I knew it was an old-ish programme. Thankfully I don't need the add-on to
be able to use the programme.

In the process I've also turned off a few other add-ons that I know I don't
need, as to your suggestion. Although, there are a whole load of microsoft
add-ons that I've left on as I have no idea what they do !

Thanks,
Ro

My computer gives me all sorts of problems on occasion, and I never know what
it is, whether it's due to the software itself of that things don't run
properly on vista or... But this IE update does seem to have solved this
particular problem for now, as usually I don't think these issues are very
serious, and just changing something often sorts it out. (Like for example,
I've been having problems also connecting to the internet, but I discovered
that turning the wireless adaptor off then back on and rebooting solved the
problem!)

With IE7 the main problems I was having: 1) It would often freeze/crash on
me, and was starting to do this more frequently 2) it would often randomly
decide to close itself (in particular when I had several tabs open/was trying
to open several tabs in quick succession) and 3) that on a social networking
site I am on the drop-down menus fopr some reason don't work (even though I
have the same browser at work and it works there fine - although I prefer not
to spend the time on the site whilst at work !) The upgrade to IE8 has
solved all but problem 3 so far, but that I can live with.

Besides, windows updater has been trying to persuade me to install updates
for weeks now, so I thought this was as good a time as any to take it's
advice for once.

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2;
Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2) when posting in a forum or newsgroup. Please do
so in your next reply.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE8?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

1) How do I find out my "full windows version" ? I know that I have Windows
Vista but none of the other bits of info mean anything to me. I wasn't the
one to originally set up my computer.

2) I have McAfee, and yes the subscription is current.

3) I have spybot search and destroy, but that isn't running all the time. I
don't think I have an extra firewall and as far as I know I have never had
any other anti-virus software on my computer since I had it.

4) I'm presuming they probably were running whilst IE8 was installing,
mainly because I don't know how to turn them off but also because I wasn't
informed by windows update that I had to do so.
