IE8 hang on "Connecting" when opening new tab. IE8 window will not close.

I've been seeing numerous IE hangs that occur seemingly at random when
opening links in new tabs. This started recently (maybe due to an IE
update?)--I don't remember seeing it at all until a couple weeks ago.

I've found some mention of similar symptoms, but those posts said that
the tab was recoverable, and that IE was still responsive. Not the
case here. The new tab simply hangs, displaying "Connecting". IE
cannot be closed at that point. Sometimes an entire IE window will
hang (all tabs), but often the other tabs still function and close
properly, with just the "Connecting" tab keeping the remaining IE
window from closing.

One similarity with other posts: It does seem to be a random
occurrence, like some 'pool' of available IE instances with some that
are unresponsive. I can't discern any pattern to when a new tab will
fail.

I had seen mention of one of the activeX DLLs becoming unregistered
(???) and causing this type of problem. Supposedly correctable via
running (as admin): "regsvr32 actxprxy.dll"
I haven't found this to help though.
