IE8 doesn't display some images

I have two sites, http://www.ukclimbing.com/ and
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/ where on those two pages there is
part of the page that doesn't load. All I get is a blank square with a
little box in the top left hand corner with some coloured blobs in it.
Everything else on those pages and indeed the rest of the site works OK.
How do I get the page to load properly? These are the only two sites/pages
that do this AFAIK....

Use the Developer Tools' Image Report to see details. (F12, Alt-I,R).

I can't really tell whether you are having trouble with an animated image at
the top of a Flash graphic near the bottom. I think it's probably the
Flash on both pages.

Either the images that you don't see rendered or the image placeholder that
you do see or Red-X. In either case you will see the URL and thus have
more information about your symptom.

Actually I'm not sure if the Image Report shows Flash... It doesn't.
Then you could use the Find tool (Ctrl-8) to help get its URL.

Good luck

Try enabling compatibility mode. It is the broken page icon next to the refresh button on the toolbar. Here’s a good resource from the IEBlog that talks about compatibility mode in detail if you’d like to learn more: IEBlog : Just The Facts: Recap of Compatibility View

If that doesn’t work, run IE in No Add-ons Mode. Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) - If this fixes the issue, then go to Tools -> Manage Add-ons and enable the add-ons one by one to find which one was causing the problem.

You can also try resetting Internet Explorer's settings by going to Tools > Internet Options and then the "Advanced" tab, and click "Reset..."

I hope this helps!

The site http://www.ukclimbing.com/ displays fine on my computer.

But I have Adobe Shockwave Player 11.5 installed.

I wonder if that's the problem. Perhaps not, if your other URL does not use
this player.

I also have installed:
Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX
Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin

You can test your Adobe Shockwave Player at:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/
or
http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

Or you can test your Java version at:
http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Finally, don't ignore Rob's suggestion to go to:
Tools>Internet Options - Security tab, click "Reset all zones to default"

None of the solutions here seem to work - interestingly the latest Firefox
displays the pages perfectly OK....

Works in FX but not IE = reset your IE security zone settings to their
default.

I would still like to get a clear symptom description.

Apples and oranges if the only problem file is Flash.
