IE8 - Default Search Provider Error

I'm not aware of what causes this problem. After IE8 displays the homepage,
a message pops up stating a program has attempted to change the default
search provider .. blah blah. Bing is now the default search provide and can
not be changed. The "Set as default" button does nothing.

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition SP3

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE8?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?
