IE8 Cancel page loading problems: Win7

Often, when a site is slow in loading, I try to cancel loading the page. This
feature of IE8 doesn't seem to respond and seems to lock-up the browser.
After waitng 20 seconds, I usually have to stop IE8 through the Task Mgr and
restart the browser. I'm not running any 3rd party toolbars and my anti-virus
is MS Security Essentials.

This happens on both my machines:
Win7 Home Premium 32-bit, Intel dual-core, Dell 9100
Win7 Home Premium 64-bit, Intel quad-core, HP p6240f

Can your car come to a complete stop from high speed as soon as you hit
the brakes?

Is takes time for all those bits being sent to you from a dozen or more
different remote servers to get the message that you don't want to see
them any more. Meanwhile, your web browser is waiting for them to
arrive. Just close the tab, but expect to wait a few seconds, or
possibly restart your browser, whether IE, Firefox, Opera...

Well, this behavior is quite different in IE7 running under Win XP. One of
the two computers (32-bit) can dual boot to Win XP. And at work, we're using
XP Pro & IE7. The Cancel page loading "button" works fine there. In addition,
my wife's computer (Win Vista/IE8) doesn't seem to exhibit this behavior. So
the problem combination seems to be Win7/IE8.

Exactly what happens when you press the Cancel button depends on the
particular state of the downloaded web page at the time, which is never
the same from second to second.

Its third-party scripts in your pages.... probably Google Adsence.

Do you have the Phishing Filter turned on?

The Smartscreen filter is OFF (default). Is this new in IE8?

Hi Gerry,

Sorry, I meant InPrivate Filtering, aka ad blocking.

Some IE Addons too, (say Piclens when you have disabled Flash) may be
waiting for a response before allowing your current page to close.
(If technically inclined you can use http://www.fiddlertool.com to inspect
your wininet requests and responses to find out what it may be waiting for.)

Actually, "Browser crashes when closing tab" is a common issue for IE8
users. (usually an earlier Google Toolbar version s.b v6+)

Testing in no-Addons mode is the definitive test.

Regards.

Thanks rob^_^

I normally don't usually install many add-ins, but in the course of
navigating, stuff tends to get installed. And I'll check the InPrivate
filtering setting. I haven't seen the "Browser crashes when closing tab"
since I don't use 3rd party toolbars.

That has also occurred when leaving your Yahoo Inbox... If that is
relevant...

I would have to track down the thread where I posted the solution to that
issue with Yahoo mail.

(from memory) It may have something to do with security zone settings and
navigating across zones of different security integrity.

Tools>Internet Settings, Security tab, click the "Reset all zones to
default" button.

Regards.
