IE8 browser issues - cookies, flash, download files

I am using IE8 on Windows XP Professional on a Dell Precision T5400 64-bit
platform PC.

Everything has been running fine for the last year and just the other day,
Internet Explorer started behaving odd after I installed Spybot Search and
Destroy and cleaned up some temporary internet files, cookies, and temp
files.

Here is what started happening. The remember me checkboxes that can store
your username and password are no longer are persisted. Everytime I close
the browser and come back to sites that I had saved my username and
password, I have to login again. It is like my cookies aren't getting
stored. I've tried dumping the temporary internet files and cookies, but the
problem still occurs. I uninstalled Spybot Search and Destroy and
reinstalled Internet Explorer 8. Still the problem persists. I've also
changed the TIF folder location and then changed back to the default
location: C:/Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Temporary
Internet Files

I noticed that if I actually navigate to the above directory c:/Documents
and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\ I don't see the Temporary Internet
Files folder, but if I open IE and navigate to Internet Options and check
the path and view files, it will open the cookies and files in the above
folder. Not sure why I don't see the Temporary Internet Files folder
though, wasn't sure if that might be a problem or if IE just creates that
folder behind the scenes?

Also, flash video used to run fine on IE (points to the 32-bit version of IE
because 64-bit doesn't support Flash, I am aware of this), but now I cannot
play Flash videos in IE8 (32-bit). If I go to Tools >> Manage Add-Ons, it
shows the Flash Shockwave player installed and if I go to Add Remove
Programs the flash player and Active X programs are installed.

Finally, I cannot download files from IE. When I tried to reinstall IE8, I
couldn't download the installer exe, so I had to use Firefox instead to
download the file and then run the install for IE8. That is just one
example of files I cannot download. I've tried to download Excel and Word
files through Outlook Webmail from my company email system and the same
problem...unable to download the file.

After re-installing IE8, I am noticing that the browser just seems to lockup
sporadically and when I try to close, I'm getting an occassional popup
"Window is busy" message.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Dwayne,

Do you have a restore point prior to installing Spybot?

It is not actually the problem, but when you deleted your cookies and temp
files etc. it appears that you have also deleted your saved form data for
autocomplete.

Try...

1. Tools>Internet Options - Advanced tab, click the "Reset Advanced
settings" button to restore the default IE Advanced settings.
2. Internet Options - Content tab, Autocomplete "Settings" button.
ensure that "Forms", "User names and passwords on forms" and "Ask me before
saving passwords" are all checked.

This won't recover your deleted Autocomplete forms data, but it should
ensure that sites will prompt to store your login credentials the next time
you visit them. You will need to recover to a restore point to do that.

Was Spybot slowing down IE8 for you? Is that why you uninstalled it and
tried to "Fix it" yourself by deleting temp files or resetting IE settings?

Any particular reason you installed Spybot? While Spybot was installed, was
Tea Timer enabled?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender &
Spybot)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these
applications running in the background when you installed IE8?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

I had gotten infected with some malware, which I ended up removing following
some manual instructions which took care of it. I had installed Spybot for
that reason, but it didn't catch the virus. I'm not sure if Tea Timer was
enabled?

I have a linksys router, which has a built-in firewall, but other than that,
no other firewall except the default that comes with the OS. Currently no
anti-virus software installed.

No McAfee or Norton anti-virus software ever installed on this PC.

IE8 had been running on my PC for at least a few months before any of this
happened. It seemed like the InPrivate browsing was turned on because I can
login to a site, browser out of the site, not close my browser session and
then come back to the site and the username and password are remembered.
But, InPrivate browsing is not enabled. I also checked if delete cookies on
exit was checked, but that is not checked either.

Windows. Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT

Thanks for the help and the steps. I am planning on doing a clean install.
In the meantime, I uninstalled IE8 and am back running IE7. Now, the
cookies are getting persisted fine using IE7.

I'm still not able to download files or run Flash movies, but everything
else seems to be working fine in IE7.

Your computer's still infested with hijackware and all of your data
(including online banking usernames and passwords) should be considered
compromised.

About not being able to see the temporary internet folders in c:/Documents
and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\ and this goes the same for Vista
c:/users\username\local settings\ get the zip program winrar and use their
file browser instead of explorer. I guarentee you'll see not onlt the
temporary internet files directory but also see the Content.IE5 directory
which stores all of your IE cache!!! You'll never see these file directories
w/ explorer. Why does Microsoft hide these directories? Use winrar's file
browser, you'll see what i'm talking about!

Sure you will, simply type the following path into the Windows Explorer
address bar and hit Enter:

C:/Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5
