IE hanging while shutting down the computer

I am using windows XP with IE 6.0. When shutting down Iexplorer.exe is
hanging up and not letting the computer shut down. The irony part of this is,
I do shut everything down on my desktop. There are nothing on the taskbar to
indicate anything is open. I even did a control, alt & delete to make sure
everything is shut down and it still does the same thing. I have not added
any new hardward, or software. I do have windows set for automatic updates.
Could it be a bad update? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Iexplorer.exe is either a typo, or malware. MS uses eight characters or
less for most executables so you get, e.g., Explorer.exe and Iexplore.exe.

Since "it" doesn't show when you open Taskmanager, I suspect malware,
maybe a rootkit. Run these:

Malwarebytes© Corporation

If they don't help, try this:

Burn BitDefender, or another program listed at the link below, to a CD
(using a working machine) and test the infected machine with it.
BitDefender also has a Rootkit checker on the Linux Desktop; run it if
you think that's the problem:

Download the executable rather than the .iso image, if one is available,
(though no .exe is available for BitDefender).

After the scan is run, if you elect to quarantine files, they're
quarantined to RAM and lost after you reboot. You'll need to copy any
quarantined files to the hard drive, a thumb drive or elsewhere before
exiting.
