IE 8 won't start

I have two systems with identical hardware and similar software apps. I
upgraded both from Vista Ultimate to Win 7 Ultimate in January. Recently,
both system have been unable to run IE8

When IE8 is invoked, it comes up with a dialogue box saying that the program
had crashed and offers to reload pages. This is immediately followed by two
dialogue boxes stating that IE has stopped working. If I try too many times
to restart, it will stop responding altogether.

I have been through a lot of web pages looking for suggestions. Most of the
instructions start with "Start Internet Explorer". Not possible in this case.

I have tried starting as administrator, starting with no add-ons. I have
gone through and removed all unused applications on my system.
I have a good security suite (Computer Associates) and I run Reg Cure fairly
frequently.

The computers are Dell Inspiron D530's with 2 Gb RAM.

If I could, I would simply re-install IE8, but as I understand the
instructions, I have to re-install Windows 7 which involves my buying extra
disk drives to get the necessary storage to save my setup and then
reinstalling all non-windows apps after reloading the data(?????)

All I really need IE for is for several of my apps which default to IE for
automatic functions such as updates and license checks. It is a lot of work
for a small but critical part of my setup.

How do I go about getting IE 8 running again?

Registry cleaners are unnecessary and dangerous. Something your registry
cleaner did could be the cause of your problems.

Another cause could be an error you made when you upgraded your computer.

Malware is always a possibility.

If you have the identical problem in Safe Mode and have exhausted all
other troubleshooting procedures, the only think left is to erase your
hard disk and start over. You can do this from your Windows 7 upgrade DVD.

Hi Suti,

What is your homepage and secondary homepages settings?

At a wild guess... try

Start>Run - iexplore.exe -nohome -extoff

to get IE8 to load in no-Addons mode and without your homepage starting,
then

Tools>Compatibility View Settings, check "Include updated web site lists
from Microsoft"

Why?

MSN (default start page for some locations) requires Compatibility View.

IE8 will attempt to load web pages in Standards Rendering and attempt this a
maximum of two times, which corresponds with the number of times you see IE
re-attempt the page load before it chokes.

By any chance have you installed the Bing or Live toolbar? Accepted to make
Bing, Live or MSN your homepage?

Have you recently done a IE Reset Settings? Or changed your Language
preferences in IE Options?

Sorry about the delay replying. I got into additional problems when I got
deeper into my system.

These system ran quite well for two months after the upgrade to Win7 (32
bit). Much better than Vista.

As far as malware is concerned, I ran a full scan with the Microsoft
Malicious Software Removal 3.5 tool and found 1 Trojan - Win32/FakeVimes.
It's gone and nothing else shows up with either this tool or my virus checker.

This computer is getting to be unstable, I have had to reset my display
parameters because they were lost and I have lost a couple of sidebar
gadgets. and the logon for Google has changed twice in the last couple of
weeks

IE 8 will start in safe mode and I was able to reset it back to the most
basic with the Microsoft startup configuration. I had to remove add-ons
manually but IE8 installed with Bing as the default search engine and it
cannot be removed - there is no option given for that. IE8 will now start in
normal mode and display an error that there had been an abnormal termination
but then it immediately crashes.

The error message in the Event Viewer is consistently the same:

Google was my search engine but is no longer part of IE8. I do use it with
Firefox. GO36F4~1.DLL cannot be found on my system. A web search gets lots
of hits, but nothing useful so far.

I have run HijackThis but I really know nothing of this software.
GO36F4~1.DLL does show up in that scan.

The other problem I ran up against is that the hosts file is missing . I
discovered this from the Event Viewer. I have some instructions on how to
replace it with a basic file but nothing on what else must be populated
there. There is a lmhosts.sam file in the folder so I am assuming it should
be named lmhost, not host but again, I have no specific instructions on that.

This is probably the cause of several error messages in Event Viewer for
Windows Media Player.

Thanks for your help. Other than this is a pain in the backside, I enjoy
problem solving and your help and Rob's has given me some interesting ideas
to chase down.
