IE 8 shuts down because of a "problem". And suggested fixes do not work

K

Flightless Bird
IE 8
Vista SP2

I've had it! I keep getting the "Explorer has encountered a problem and has
shut down" message. I've tried the suggested fixes, like disabling all
add-ons and resetting IE to default settings. Doesn't help.

What more can I do?

Many thanks.

Does the message say Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer?

Sorry I wasn't more clear. It says Internet Explorer.

Thanks.

Re: IE 8 shuts down because of a "problem". And suggested fixes donot work

The three most likely causes for that message are:

1. Incompatible browser add-ons.
2. Configuration errors.
3. Malware.

I would say, conservatively, that one or more of the above is behind
99.5% of all appearances of the message.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE8 and/or SP2?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Have done the uninstall and reinstall of McAfee Security Center, and am now
awaiting to see if the InetExplorer errors recur. I'm starting with all
add-ons disabled in IE, and will proceed from there.

Thanks for your help. Will advise.

OK. Just had my first instance of the IE error since uninstalling and
reinstalling McAfee.

I've confirmed that all add-ons are disabled.
I also did the "Reset IE setting so their default conditions" thing.

So now what? This is getting old.

Thanks!

FWIW, since my last post, I uninstalled IE 8, disabled McAfee and
reinstalled IE 8. The IE error just recurred a moment ago after doing this.

1. Do Steps #1 & #2 (only) of the three-step fix again.

2. Important: Make sure the Windows Firewall is enabled!

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) until you've completed Step #6 below!

3. Uninstall IE8 & reboot twice; do *not* reinstall IE8 yet.

4. Run Windows Update manually and install any Important updates offered
(i.e., KB978207) but hide IE8 ("Don't show me this update again") for the
time being

5. Reinstall McAfee Security Center & reboot twice.

6. Manually & repeatedly update your McAfee app until you get a "no more
updates" prompt.

7. After making certain that the McAfee Firewall's enabled & the Windows
Firewall is disabled, see if the behavior persists in IE7. If it does, try
No Add-ons mode & doing a Reset again.

I'll try this today, but I have two questions:

1) in your Step 7, you say that if the problem persists in IE7 I should do a
"Reset" again. Uh, which "reset" are you referring to?
2) At which point (if any) do I try IE8 again?

Many thanks.

A1. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

A2. You don't just yet. If the problem persists in IE7, the problem is
caused by something other than IE8, so I don't want you to reinstall IE8
until you've gotten the problem resolved.

Regarding "when do I try IE8 again," I mean supposing IE7 runs consistently
with no problems. In other words, how long should my IE7 test last? Couple
of days? A week? Longer?

Thanks.

When I tell you it's OK to reinstall IE8 *and* after I give you specific
instructions on how to reinstall it.

OK, PA Bear, I've gone three full days with IE7 without incident. You think
it's time to re-install IE8?

If so, I await your promised specific instructions.

Thanks.

[Why did you snip all of the previous conversation? Please stop doing
that.]

=> Install IE8 manually, not via Windows Update/Automatic Updates!! =>
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/worldwide-sites.aspx

NB WinXP users: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it. When
you're prepared to install IE8, double-click on the saved file.

NB Vista users: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it. When
you're prepared to install IE8, right-click on the saved file and select Run
as Administator.

=> Uninstall all third-party toolbars (e.g., Google; Yahoo; Windows Live)
and third-party Windows Themes before installing IE8.

=> Close all open applications (i.e., anything with a taskbar icon) before
installing or uninstalling IE8.

=> Temporarily disable your anti-virus application's and any anti-spyware
application's "system protections" (other than Defender's) before installing
(or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. If you're running a third-party firewall,
I would recommend disabling it and then enabling the Windows Firewall before
installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade.

NB WinXP users=> Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8, then go
to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any
Critical Security Updates offered (i.e., KB976325). If a Root Certificates
update is listed in the Optional Updates category, install it to take full
advantage of IE's enhanced security.

NB Vista users=> Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8, then
check-in at Windows Update and install any critical security updates
offered.

=> For best chance of success with IE8, make certain that your anti-virus
application version, any anti-spyware applications (other than Defender),
and your third-party firewall (if any) are supported in IE8 before you
decide install it.

No-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage
(only) is available via telephone (based on your locale) and has been
extended until 02 July 2010. Customers must be running Windows XP or Windows
Vista in a non-domain environment.

Thanks. Will give it a shot.

Regarding snipping the prior, here I thought I was doing the right thing by
not cluttering things with a l-o-n-g message. But yeah, I guess that does
make it hard to follow!

Thanks again.
