IE 8 Problems on Windows 7 64 bit

I am running Win7 64bit on an ASUS P6TD with 12GB of RAM
IE 8 (32 bit) was installed by the default install from the Win7 DVD
I am having very unusual problems in that every new tab that I open results
in a new instance of iexplore.exe *32 as shown by the task manager. Whats is
worse is that the instances never close.
When I do close (either a tab or the entire IE8 app) the task manager shows
that all of the instances stay active in memory. And random occurances of a
message box appears that says "A tab has been recovered" Sometimes if I had
been viewing a video that I later closed the audio from that video will just
start to play. Even when no IE8 window is visable. If I try to force the
instances to close by "ending the process in Task Manager, some time the
instance closes, sometimes it returns, and sometimes IE8 laock the entire
system.
I have run Security Essentials and all the malware removal tools all with
uptodates current.
I have uninstalled IE8 - and reinstalled - only to have the problems continue.
It is strange that there is no 64 bit version for Win 7. Is this a new
problem - or is there a fix???

What other security-related applications are installed besides MSE &
Defender (e.g., anti-virus; anti-spyware; third-party firewall)?

Did you upgrade to Win7 64-bit or did you format the HDD before installing
Win7 64-bit?

For every instance of IE8 opened, you will find 2 instances in Task Manager
| Processes tab. See:

If you close all IE8 windows and wait a minute or so, do you still see any
instances of IE (IEXPLORE.EXE) in Task Manager | Processes tab?

PA Bear. Thanks for the quick response.
There are no third party security products onthe system. All MS security
code.
Security Essentials has real-time protection on, Virus and spyware defs up
to date.
I have updated Win7 security patches when they were been released, and have
run Malware removal tools several times. The Win7 firewall has no exceptions
configured. MS Balseline Security analyzer confirms this.

The OS build was not an upgrade - I formated the HD and installed Win7 from
scratch. It is the iexplore *32 from the orignal install that is currently
on the system.

As I write this note - Task Manager is reporting 15 instances of
iexplore.exe *32
and only one instance of IE8 has been invoked, - mouse over the IE8 icon in
the task bar shows 4 entries in the pop-up, 3 related to this reply and
"bing' the second tab in my original IE8 homepage. If I close All tabs and
IE8 windows the number of processes with an Image name of iexplore.exe *32
will remain at 15. I can wait hours - indeed I discovered this problem when
I started to hear the audio portion of a training video I had been viewing -
long after I had closed IE8 entirely. At first I thought that the audio was
part of the screen saver. Loging in to clear the screen saver I discoverd
that the the audio stream was not the saver at all and that it had no
associated (visable) window. The TM showed ~12 IE8 images in memory. And
randomly a warning pop-up would declare that a "A tab has been recovered"
and then dissapear.

I have visited the IE8 homepage and my MSDN subscriber download page within
the last 10 mins. I can see no version of IE8 versin for 64 bit Windows 7.
I will investigate the link you provided.

Win7 64-bit includes IE8 32-bit and IE8 64-bit by default.

The executable for IE8 32-bit is located here:

C:/Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

The executable for IE8 64-bit is located here:

Please answer the following questions by number in your reply (i.e., don't
try to intersperse your answers in the quote of my post):

1. Does the behavior persist if you start IE in No Add-ons mode?

2. Does the behavior persist if you Reset IE Advanced settings (RIES)?

3a. After you installed Win7 64-bit, how long was the computer connected to
the internet *or any local networks* (i.e., other computers) before MSE was
installed & fully-updated *and* the machine was fully-patched at Windows
Update?

3b. After you installed Win7 64-bit, did you insert anything other than a
brand-new or freshly-formatted flash drive or SDCard into the computer
before MSE was installed & fully-updated *and* the machine was fully-patched
at Windows Update?

3c. After you installed Win7 64-bit, did you transfer any data from another
computer to the machine via CD or DVD before MSE was installed &
fully-updated *and* the machine was fully-patched at Windows Update?

Tell you the truth, this all "smells" like a hijackware infection.
