What version of Word? I'm using IE8 and Word with Office 2010 Beta.
Copy/Paste as usual. Any particular web site that doesn't work for you?

Sorry, I should have been a bit more informative. Word 2002 & 2007 on XP
SP3 & Vista SP1.

Here's the web site. http://www.bcfed.ca/node/1959

Hi,

1. Tools>Internet Options - Security tab, click "Reset all zones to default"

2. Go to http://enhanceie.com/ua.aspx and follow the instructions there to
fix your browsers userAgent string if it detects a problem.

Regards.

On the XP machine I reset all zones to default then ran the enhanceie page

Enhanceie shows the browser as IE 8. If I switch it to 7 other stuff
quits working.

FWIW the page generated would copy into Word no problem so now I am back
to suspecting a bad web page that only screws up IE and Word. THat still
doesn't let IE off the hook

I can confirm that on XP SP3, IE 8, Word 2002 hangs when pasting text copied
from that particular web site, but I've never had that problem from other
sites. I also tried compatibility mode, same result. I could paste into
Notepad and then into Word from notepad.

It wotks if instead of pasting directly, you go edit/paste special/Formatted
text RTF. So it must be something wrong with the html format on that site.

Using Word 2010, and it handles straight text, merged format, and RTF from
that site. But, whichever format is used, the paste takes a few seconds
with the busy cursor spinning. Other websites paste instantly, in any
format.

There's a new note pad out that handles html?

It appears that there is something wrong with the interface between the
web page, IE 8 and certain versions of Word, remember, info copied from
the FireFox rendering of the page pastes into all versions of Word Just
fine.

Anyhow, Thanks to those who suggested the "Paste Special" RTF option. It
works on Word 2000 at least.

Notepad has always been able to handle HTML - I wrote most of my first
websites using it. I now use EditPad Lite mostly because it has better UTF
and EOF handling. HTML is just plain text after all :)

By pasting into Notepad and then recopying the content is stripped of any
underlying formatting, and so you can then paste just the content into Word
rather than the entire binary object so that Word doesn't spend ages trying
to parse the HTML (it's probably hanging while resolving references to
external elements in the HTML).

No, it means that the data that IE8 places into the clipboard is not the
same as the data that Firefox places into the clipboard. The problem here is
with Word itself if it's having trouble parsing the pasted content from the
clipboard.

Sorry but you just provided back up for my comment about NotePad. Just
to qualify, it does not render html.

Actually I don't think the problem is with Word per se. IE 8 is doing
something differently than FireFox. It is either corrupting what is
being placed on the clipboard or it is not parsing the code in the page
properly. I will concede that there is certainly something amiss with
the web site as well. Interestingly enough when I tried to paste copied
data from a different page (one that contained images) at that site in
to a Thunderbird e-mail the text was transferred but the images were
not. FireFox would do that, no problem

In searching the web for a solution I stumbled across several others
with the same issue but the problem was with different websites.

If I were an MSMVP I would certainly bring this issue up for discussion
with Microsoft just to track down the actual reason why a web browser
that otherwise works fine can mangle a simple operation like
transferring copied data to the clipboard which then causes Word to lock
up when said data is pasted in to it. And I'd do it quick before those
that are in denial about there screwed up website find and fix the
problem. Who knows it could even lead to a flaw which points to a
potential security breech.

I am not lauding Mozilla products over Microsoft stuff. I am just
pointing out what I see as a potentially serious flaw. Now if someone
pops in with a registry fix that actually works or some other repair
that cam be done I'll just use work-arounds for the time being. Actually
I won't because this was never my problem to start with. 'Twas that of a
friend.

Good point but it begs the question just what is IE 8 saying it must try
to download that FireFox doesn't.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to add this to my thread in the IE group.
