IE 8.0.6 remove as default browser

I'm runuuing IE 8.0.6001. I do not want this as my default browser. When I go
to internet options/tools/programs the "make default" button is grayed and I
cannot find how to undo making IE my default browser. Any help? thanks.

Go to the browser taht you want as the default and click the equivelent of
TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>PROGRAMS and set it as the Default Browser, then
return to Internet Explorer and go to TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>PROGRAMS and
uncheck the box that tells IE to check to see if it is the default.

I suppose you could uncheck the checkbox first so that IE does not tell you
that it isn't the default anymore, but to set the default browser, you do it
from the browser you want to use.

Hi Genie,

That setting option is usually grayed by another Program that is controlling
your computer security to prevent you from using a less secure browser or a
browser that your security program does not support. If it is a work
computer contact your Network Administrators or Help Desk.

It may also be grayed if you are using the Guest account in Windows. Check
that you have loged on with the correct account.

Regards.

If IE as the Default Browser is grayed out, then it is already the default
and it can't be selected again. If another browser is the default, then IE
will allow you to select it as the default, and then this option won't be
gray.

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2;
Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7; Win7 64-bit) when posting in a forum or
newsgroup. Please do so in your next reply.

What other browsers are installed?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

One,
Why are you asking me?

Two,
What difference in the windows version does it make to set the default
browser away from Internet Explorer (any version)? The default browser is
set from within the browser one wishes to have as the Default Browser.

Start the browser you want as the default. Navigate to the equivelent of
IE's Tools>Internet Options>Programs, and set that browser as the default.

You'll want to deselect the "Shall I check to see if I am the default
browser application" or whatever the setting calls itself in all of your
other browsers so they don't constantly alert you that they are not the
default anymore.

Your OS does not matter, as has been suggested by another. The default
browser is set from within the browser that you want as the default, not
from within the one that you want to NOT be the default anymore.

Since I don't know which browser you want to use, I can't tell you
specifically what to click, but whatever you click it will look something
like Tools>Internet Options>Programs. You can click around inside of
Internet Explorer to see what it says, then transfer that knowledge to
whichever browser you want as the Default. In Google Chrome, for example,
there is a wrench button in the upper righthand corner that opens a dropdown
box with Options as one of the choices, which opens a dialog bos with a
button that says, MAKE GOOGLE CHROME MY DEFAULT BROWSER. I'm sure that
FireFox and Safari have similar buttons in more or less the same place. None
of this is driven by the Operating System.

As a practical matter, you should be in the habit of giving your OS and the
application version when you are asking questions in a forum such as this,
but in this case the OS does not matter.

I have four browsers, and each of them has a button that says, in effect,
MAKE ME THE DEFAULT BROWSER, and a checkbox that says to check this
everytime, or not. That's enough for me.

Since the OP did not ask about how to set the default viewer for HTML files,
then the fact that one can go into the File Associations and tell Windows
what to do when an HTML file is double-clicked does not seem to be
important, and this action is controlled by the OS.

The Default Browser is the one that opens when the user clicks a link and
wants a browser to come up. That is controlled by the browser, not the OS.

So, your response(s) of, "Wrong!" and "+1" falls short. And, begs the
question of, "Why are you asking me?", I'm not the one with a problem
setting my default browser.
