IE 7 question

K

Ken A.

Flightless Bird
I have two machines both running XP Pro w/IE7. Older machine has sp2 the
other one has sp3. Both are fully patched from Windows update. My IE7 is not
working properly on BOTH machines. It is real slow and sometimes when I try
to use a link it will just freeze up. I have tried using IE7 with the No
Add ons and it does not help. I have used AVG (free). Spybot,
SuperAntiSpyware (free) and Malwarebytes (paid version) to check for malware
and both machine come up clean. These computers are not networked. I have
spybot and Spyware Blaster installed on both machine and have been told that
they are not compatible with IE8. Is this correct? Currently I am using
Firefox and it is working great. I still prefer Internet Explorer IF I can
get it working properly. I would appreciate anyone help in resolving this
problem.

Thanks for any help,
Ken A.

Preliminary Comments:

=> Extended Support for WinXP (x86) SP2 ends on 13 July 2010. After that
date, computers running WinXP (x86) SP2 "will no longer receive software
updates from Windows Update" (i.e., Automatic Updates will not work and
Windows Update website will not be accessible) until SP3 is installed.

• What does it mean if my version of Windows is no longer supported?

Questions:

1. Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the computer
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

2. Can you manally update AVG Free (v9.0?) on both computers successfully?

3. Is AVG Linkscanner, Search-Shield, Active Surf-Shield, Security toolbar,
and/or any of the email scanning components installed on either computer?

4. Are both KB980182 and KB979683 listed in Add/Remove Programs?

Answer:

> that
> they are not compatible with IE8. Is this correct?

No, the current versions of both applications are IE8-compatible. That
being said, you'd want to disable Spybot Residents SDHelper & TeaTimer (as
well as AVG Resident realtime protection) prior to installing IE8 (which
will NOT resolve your current problem).

Thank you PA Bear for you information. When you wrote "No, the current
versions of both applications are IE8-compatible. That
being said, you'd want to disable Spybot Residents SDHelper & TeaTimer (as
well as AVG Resident realtime protection) prior to installing IE8 (which
will NOT resolve your current problem)." When you said that this would
not solve my current problem did you mean that there is no solution to my
problem or installing IE8 would not solve my problem??? Do you have any
idea what is causing my current problem? Just got a idea, what is I
uninstall spybot and avg and not reinstall them as I am no longer that
impressed with them.
Thank you for your help,
Ken A.

Upgrading to IE7 or IE8 is not going to resolve any problems.

Re: IE 7 question PROBLEM FOUND

I found out why IE7 had gotten so slow. On my older machine I uninstalled
AVG & SpyBot. I then installed IE8. IE8 worked great UNTIL I reinstalled
AVG. Then it really slowed down. Uninstalled AVG and IE8 worked fine. On
my other machine with IE7, which was also running very slow, I just
uninstalled AVG and now it is running well again.
Maybe this info can help someone with a similar problem

This is interesting to know.

Still, we only know what the symptoms were but not what the actual
problem was that was causing the symptoms. For all we know, the problem
will manifest itself again.

Sometimes clearing temp files and rebooting is all that is necessary to
address this short of issue. (Upgrading to IE8 forced a reboot.)

Yes AVG really loads the system. It is best to remove it and then
install the virusscanner from Microsoft.

So upgrading to IE 8 did not solve your problem. Your problem had
nothing to do with Internet Explorer.

Re: IE 7 question PROBLEM FOUND

Had you disabled all AVG components and Spybot Residents SDHelper & Tea
Timer before you installed IE7 and/or IE8?

Had a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the computer
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Is/was AVG Linkscanner, Search-Shield, Active Surf-Shield, Security toolbar,
and/or any of the email scanning components installed?

Did the "slow-down" persist after you'd started IE7 or IE8 in No Add-ons
mode?

Did the "slow-down" persist after you'd reset IE7 or IE8 Advanced settings
(RIES)?

PA Bear,
For some reason you do not want to accept what I say!! I had problems with
IE7 running slow. The problem IS resolved, no matter what you say. I use
my computer and I should know. AVG was the problem. Now what it conflicted
with I am not sure. I just have a hunch that MAYBE AVG & Malwarebytes
conflicted. I know that when I uninstalled AVG on both of my machines I got
a very speedy IE7. IE8 was just a bit slower.

Thanks to everyone that responded. I am happy as the issue is resolved,
even if some people insist it is not.

The fixing AVG resolved your IE problems, not upgrading to IE8.
