I went into restricted sites and add facebook on my son's computer and now I
would like to remove that so he can get to facebook. The problem is when I
go back into restricted sites it is not listed; however when I open up the
facebook page it show at the bottom restricted site. How do I remove this to
allow him to go there?
He has Microsoft Vista on is computer.
Thank you
Sheila

Are you thinking of Content Advisor vs. Restricted Sites security zone?
[Placing facebook.com in Restricted Sites zone wouldn't keep him from
accessing the website.]

I did go into Restricted zone and typed in www.facebook.com so that he could
not get to facebook; however now I have removed that restriction from my home
and he is allowed to access this website. My problem is it is not in the
restricted zone to remove it.

You missed the point: Placing a website in Restricted Sites security zone
[as in IE Tools | Internet Options | Security | Restricted Sites] does NOT
disable any user from accessing the website.

You may have used Vista Parental Controls (or some other software) to
disable access to the site. If so, you'll have to re-enable access that
way. See
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/set-up-parental-controls
and
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Limit-the-content-that-children-can-view-on-the-web.

Wow, now I am really confused. About 6 months ago I reformatted his computer
and removed the parental controls (he is the admin - no password etc) and I
know I went into IE Tools | Internet Options | Security | Restricted Sites
and put in that website. Once I did that I verified he could not get into
facebook. I am wondering now if he went in there and messed with something.
When I go to www.facebook.com on that page before I log on it says Javascript
is disabled on your browser. I went ahead and logged in to my account and
takes me to the same log in page over and over. Any suggestions?

1. Right-click on My Computer & select Properties: What Windows version is
displayed in the resulting General tab (e.g., Windows XP Professional
Service Pack 1; Windows Vista Ultimate Service Pack 2)?

2a. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

2b. Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it and which would have been reinstalled, but invalid, when you reinstalled
Windows "about 6 months ago")?

3. IE Tools | Internet Options | Security | click on/highlight Restricted
Sites | click on Sites button: Closely examine the list. If
www.facebook.com and/or *.facebook.com is listed, select/highlight it then
click on the Remove button. Close IE, reboot & test.

+ Tools>Internet Options, Security tab, click "Reset all zones to default"

(Robear: I had a bar fight with EL about this on his blog.)
Re: FB says scripting is disabled. This will only occur if FB is in the
Internet Zone AND active scripting has been disabled BUT Meta refresh is
still enabled (default for Internet Zone). Sites in the Restricted Zone have
both Active Scripting and META Refresh disabled.

1 - Windows Vista Home Service Pack 2
2a - AVG anti-virus, Spybot and AD-Aware. They are all current. We run
each of them once a week. No third-party, just Windows firewall and is
turned on.
2b - Nothing came with the computer. Before I formatted I have Norton but
did not put it back on.
3 - There is no mention of facebook in restricted sites.

Thanks
Sheila

Humor me and do the following:

1. Download the Norton Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

2. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar).

3. Right-click on the file you saved in #1 above and select Run as
Administrator to run the utility. Don't TOUCH your keyboard until the run
completes, then reboot.

4. Reset IE7 Advanced settings per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 &
reboot once more.

5. After making certain that Parental Controls is not enabled [1] or that
facebook.com is not blocked *and* "some web content [is not] blocked
automatically," [2] see if the behavior persists.

I did all step but have a couple questions.
When I did #4 I used the Fix it for me button, was that correct?
When I did #5 I could not find anything on the website for making sure
parental controls were not on, but I went to parental controls and the only
person list was my son with no password. If I remember correctly when I set
this up last time I was the administrator. I am assuming by this that they
are not set. After I formatted I never set this up again. I was not sure
about the rest of #5 when you said facebook.com is not blocked *and* "some
web content [is not] blocked automatically," [2] see if the behavior persists
I did try to open the welcome screen for facebook and put in my password and
when I signed it it went back to the same welcome screen.

Parental Controls (capitilized) is a Vista component, not something you'd
find on any website. See...

HOW TO Set up Parental Controls
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/set-up-parental-controls

Limit the content that children can view on the web (using Parental
Controls)

IE Tools | Internet Options | Privacy | Sites: type...

facebook.com

and click on the Allow (cookies) button.

I looked on both those websites for parental control to figure out how to
make sure this is not turned on and there is nothing, only how to set it up;
which I do not want to do. I do not think it is on because you have to have
2 accounts to use parental controls if I remember correctly.

I added facebook to the sites and allowed cookies
Facebook will still not let me in.
Interesting how when I am on the login page for facebook at the botton just
about the taskbar it has a circle with a line through it and says Restricted
Sites Protected Mode: On and then has a picture with an eye and circle and
line through that; which is privacy report. I clicked on that and it showed
the restriced sites; http:/www.facebook.com/home.php? and
http:/www.facebook.com/login.php and shows both websites as blocked. I
selected each website and clicked summary and at the bottom left it is
checked always allow this site to use cookies.

There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware
infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

Microsoft PCSafety provides home users (only) with no-charge support in
dealing with malware infections such as viruses, spyware (including unwanted
software), and adware.
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?&prid=7552&st=1

Also available via the Consumer Security Support home page:
https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/

Otherwise...

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!)
in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

2b. Vista or Win7=> Run this scan instead:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm

3. Now run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!!

Checking for/Help with Hijackware:

• http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Malware_Defence.htm

**Chances are you will need to seek expert assistance in
http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?board=10.0,
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/viewforum.php?f=5,
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cleanup,
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 or other appropriate forums.**

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

Shelia,

Vista can be a little odd sometimes. I had the same problem, here is the fix.
You will want to go to All Programs/Accessories/Run, type in regedit. From
there
expand HKEY Current User/expand software/expand Microsoft/expand
Windows/expand
Current Version/ expand Internet Settings/ expand Zone Map/ expand Domains.
Now
scroll down until you see Facebook, right click it, delete it, restart
Internet
Explorer and enjoy. It may seem like a lot but it will only take a minute or
so.

Sheila!

FINALLY! Someone who had the exact same problem as I did! I too added facebook to restricted site and I couldn't fine it on the list. This is what I did and it worked.

Go to this site and you will see:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/restricted.htm

They will ask you to right click on the hyperlink called Deldomain. Save it to your desktop. The directions weren't the best.

Then, right click on the icon on your desktop and click on install.

You will NOT have to restart your computer. Exit out of your browser. Then bring it back up. Go to facebook and you will see it is no longer restricted.

This clears all sites in your restricted zone. And it is ok to do this. I read about it. It could even speed up your IE.
