Icons on desktop get covered, how can I find them?

My Win XP desktop is covered with yellow PostIt notes... the electronic kind.
When I download a photo or a file and save it to the desktop, the icon often gets put UNDER a note. I can't find it.

Yes, I could sort the desktop, but I have the icons and notes arranged where I want them.

Yes, I can navigate to a list of desktop file names and see the covered file... but what I want to do is grab the icon for drag/drop.

For example, I know I have a photo called "copper.jpg" on my desktop now, but I can't find it without moving dozens of PostIt notes to look under them.

Is there a trick to make a covered icon move to the front by using its file name? Or make an icon move to say the center of the desktop, or the lower left corner of the desktop so I would know where to look for it?

Thanks.
