Icons in folders disappear.

I have WindowsXP SP3.

Lately the contents of the shortcuts on the desktop are
defaulting at will back to "detailed" view.

Normally I have these as icons. Also, the window size is
varying.

Hoe can I keep them as icons?

Please help, Frank
