My computer thing from Windows is telling me that it is OK to install Windows 7, let mea ask, it is really necessary that I backup my files before I install W7? I am not very computer savvy, and I wonder if all I need to do is install the CDs and just do the update without the backup? My computer is Vista 32 now, I assume that it will automatically stay in 32 bits or it will automatically go to 64? Please advise.

It's not a matter of necessity, it's a matter of prudence. It's always prudent to make a backup to external media before you take any big step. Although it shouldn't be necessary, things *can* go wrong. Moreover, your question suggests that you don't do regular backups. If you don't, you are playing with fire. It's not a matter of *whether* you will lose your files, it's a matter of *when* you will lose them. You might want to read this article on backup I've written: "Back Up Your Computer Regularly and Reliably" at http://www.computorcompanion.com/LPMArticle.asp?ID=314 > I am not very computer savvy, and I wonder if all I need to > do is install the CDs and just do the update without the backup? Can you? Yes. Should you? No. > My computer is Vista 32 now, I assume that it will automatically stay in 32 > bits or it will automatically go to 64? It's not a matter of doing either automatically. If you want to do an upgrade from 32-bit Vista to Windows 7, your only choice is to upgrade to 32-bit Windows 7. If you want to go to 64-bit Windows 7, you have to do a clean installation.
Like swapping horseshit for dogshit, both operating systems are worst than atrocious. Go back to XP or join the fucks who use Linux. It's not really necessary to backup your data. But there is always a very real chance of losing it if you don't. The power could fail in the middle of the upgrade - or any number of things. Backing up 'irreplaceable data' is a prudent thing to do. I'm no expert, but it's my understanding that you can't do an upgrade from 32 to 64 bits.

BETTER TAKE IT ONE STEP FURTHER AND MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A WINDOWS VISTA RESTORE DISK JUST IN CASE THE WINDOWS 7 DVD FAILS 2 INSTALL! P.S. WINDOWS 7 IS ONLY AVAILABLE IN DVD FORMAT, JUST FYI! YOU WILL NEED 2 HAVE A DVD BURNER IF YOU DECIDE 2 PURCHASE IT AS A DOWNLOAD!
P.S. UPGRADING FROM 32 BIT 2 64 BIT WINDOWS REQUIRES A WINDOWS 7 BOOTABLE DVD AND A CLEAN INSTALL AT POST, JUST FYI!
Octavio: To have 64 Bit your computer needs to have a 64 Bit Processor such as Intel Core 2 Due or Quad Core. If you have a Pentium 4 or older its 32Bit & will only work with 32Bit Windows. I don't know enough about the AMD CPU's to list which are 64 & which 32 bit. You will have a lot less problems with hardware & programs you already have working OK with 32 bit than with 64. There are no really big advantages in 64 bit for most people ... its not like its the 'Next Best Thing' we have to have. Think about this carefully. Why do you want to change from your VISTA ??? I mean its still OK ...you don't have to get Windows 7 ...It will not seem like any big difference . @@@ Mouse@@@
Re: tony is a moron! I do test in my off time so i have used the GD thing. I quickly formatted my hard drive to get rid of it after it asked me all stupid questions. I just want an operating system not play teacher with question and answer periods. The warez sites can only do so much to improve winodws 7 but still it's a hunk a shit even modified.
