Hyperlinks not working

Hi,

I'm starting to use hyperlinks to point to other documents, after
realising that insert files only inserts a copy. The hyperlinks only
seem to work if Word is open. If Word is not open the links stop
working, returning an 'unable to open, program to which your are
navigating is busy' error. The path is correct, except for a % sign
being inserted for spaces. When I hover over the link, the path is
correct (no % signs). I've tried editing the link and the address is
displayed correctly in the field, prior to clicking OK, but I keep
getting the same error when I actually click on the link. The document
in question is on the same drive.

Any suggestions please...

1. I'm sorry, I think that's a well known problem, reported here from
time to time
2. I don't remember a solution, but possibly Ben Schorr has an idea ?
3. But let me ask: how do you create your hyperlinks ?

a. by Insert, Hyperlink ..., navigating to the file
b. copy, insert using explorer
c. Drag & Drop using explorer

Try out all methods and compare ...

BTW:
Use a new page for testing to exclude any "environmental" effects.

What operating system are you running? What version of Word?

If you have a shortcut to a document on your Windows desktop and try to open
it do you get the same result?

Just another test:

Right click a not working hyperlink (Word not running),
choose Edit Hyperlink, copy the real hyperlink from the 1st field into
the address bar of Internet Explorer, Enter.
What happens ?

Operating system: Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit)
Word version: Word 2007

I've tried the following on a new 'test' page in ON, as suggested:

a. by Insert, Hyperlink ..., navigating to the file (only works when
Word is open)
b. copy, insert using explorer (only works when Word is open)
c. Drag & Drop using explorer (only works when Word is open)

If you have a shortcut to a document on your Windows desktop and try

choose Edit Hyperlink, copy the real hyperlink from the 1st field
into
the address bar of Internet Explorer, Enter.

Also, when I open the file properties on the shortcut on the desktop,
the address does not have the % sign replacing the spaces)

It seems to not work correctly from within ON; is this something to do
with the insertion of the %?. When I hover over the link in ON, the
address doesn't have these signs (only when I go to edit hyperlink)

3. could you show us a copy of your link (from "edit hyperlink") ?

Odd - it works fine for me on a Vista box (I don't currently have OneNote 07
installed in a Windows 7 machine).

Long shot but have you tried doing a Repair installation on Office? Control
Panel | Programs....

Hi Bernd,

This is a copy of the hyperlink from the address fiels in edit
hyperlink:

file//DWorking%20Files\Open%20University\SDK%20125\Book%20notes%20(copy)\Book%201%20Notes.doc

and here's a copy of the same link taken from the desktop shortcut:

"DWorking Files\Open University\SDK 125\Book notes (copy)\Book 1
Notes.doc"

I would try the repair installation, but I don't want to reset any of
my user preferences or upset an otherwise working ON! This issue is
more of a curiosity than I major thing.

I have rebuild your complete path on my PC: problem not reproducible ...

My (perhaps) last question:

Is there a security message (about a security risk) first, after you
clicked on the hyperlink ?
I see this message ...

Yes. It says MS Office has identified a potantial security
concern...The location may be unsafe...Do you want to continue?

I don't get this message when I double-click on the desktop link.

I'm not sure if this might be the problem, or how to convince ON that
this link is ok.

No. That message is normal behaviour in Office. I'd rather liked to hear
that you did NOT get this message, that would have been a deviation from
the standard.

Hi Bernd & Ben,

Thanks very much for your time and effort. I assumed that W7 was much
more security concious than previous OS and the security warnings were
a manifestation of this vigilence. I'll have a look at my security
settings now.
