HP Scanners and Drivers for Win Vista

Good Day:

When I check for scanner drivers for models 2400c, 3970, and 4200 on HP's
website, it only lists XP and earlier.

Do any HP scanner models have drivers for Windows Vista?

Will an XP driver work on Vista?

What are Vista users supposed to do?

*I wanted to add something.

When I checked drivers for HP 2400c, HP 3970, and HP 4200 for Windows Vista
on HP's website, it showed a Vista driver for 3970 but not for 4200c or 3400c.

That doesn't make sense since the 4200c model is a newer model than 3970.

Why would a manufacturer create a Vista driver for an older scanner model
but not a newer scanner model?

Can an XP driver be used for Vista or do Vista users have to purchase a
scanner that is compatible with Vista?

HP and other equipment mfrs make money selling new equipment, not extending
the life of older models. The 3970 was a "mass market" scanner,
and likely has/had enough users that HP didn't want to listen to the
complaints. You should look at Viewscan, and perhaps try the free download
to see if it works.
There is also a difference between a driver that requires minimal changing
to work with Vista/Win 7 and one that requires an extensive re-write.

4200

Listed as "not compatible" on Microsoft's website for the Scanjet 4200c:

HOWEVER, it seems someone has come up with a solution for its use with Vista
(at your own risk):

AND

Use the sj655en.exe (last update for the HP4200c Scanjet) and have your
Vista operating system updated to Servicepack1 and hopefully it'll work as
it did on my 2 HP laptops. .

I thought that the lower the 'number,' the earlier it was manufactured-Are
you saying that 3970 is a 'newer' model than 4200c even though it has a lower
number and because 3970 was 'mass produced' and had complaints from users,
that's why 3970 has a Vista driver?

I use XP right now but I want an HP that has the 'capacity' to work on Vista
in the future.

Often the XP driver will work for whatever device, especially if your Vista
is the 32-bit version. There's no harm in giving the XP driver a try because
it very well probably might work in most cases. Notice though here, for the
4200, that you have to make use of another driver as explained in the
discussions.

Here's what 'still' doesn't make sense:

A user wrote that the HP 4200c was manufactured in 2001 and the HP 3970 was
manufactured in 2003 so why does the 'later' model (4200c) have an earlier
manufacturer year? (2001)

Wouldn't it make more sense for HP to create Vista drivers for a 'later' and
'higher' model of 4200c since it is 'newer?'

Did HP create a Vista driver for 3970 because it was 'mass produced' and
they had a lot of complaints from customers so they 'gave' in to customer
demand whereas 4200c was not 'mass produced?'

Is it because 3970 was 'mass produced' which is why HP created a Vista driver?

Hello John Izar,

Windows 7 Compatibility: (There you will find out about hardware and
software compatibilty.)
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/en-us/default.aspx
There is a pulldown from which you can choose "hardware" and
"software".

There are also some great articles, instructional videos and such to
help with your Windows 7 at our Springboard site:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/default.aspx

Thanks again,
