How will windows 7 work in a old Gateway 2 MB computer that currently has Vista Ultimate?

Will it slow it down? Will it limit what the rest of the other programs
will do?

Also, I conveniently use currently the Newsgroups in Windows Live Mail, but
I see that I will not be able to use the Newsgroups like that with W-7. Is
that true? If it is true, Any advise about an alternate program similar to
Live Windows Mail that is free and easy to download and use it for
Newsgroups?

Thanks in advance.

Probably not.

Windows Live Mail works in Win7...but plenty of alternatives are
available...some are even good at newsgroups.

XPN is good, free, but you gotta install python and GTK also.

Re: How will windows 7 work in a old Gateway 2 MB computer thatcurrently has Vista Ultimate?

The only way to find it out is to try it on your system using a
trial version of Windows 7. Before doing that, the normal caveats
apply like backing up your documents, music files, emails,
pictures and porn films. Ideally, you should clone your HD so
that you can revert back to your vista if you don't like Win 7.

Trial versions are available from Microsoft website and trial runs
out end of this year (December, 2010).

Thnks for your imput. The trial version last for how long after you
download them? (Also, are the prices for purchasing from Micosoft higher
thatn if you buy them from retail stores like Best Buy, etc?)

It it runs Vista well, it should run Windows 7 just as well, maybe
slightly better. Check with Gateway to see if Win7-specific drivers are
available and use them in possible. Back up your current system, just
in case something goes wrong or doesn't work out the way you hope.

This is what I am told by email by Microsoft:

"The availability of Windows 7 Enterprise (Eval) 90-day Trial is
being extended to Dec 31, 2010. Intended primarily for IT pros,
the 90-day trial is the full-featured Enterprise SKU that will
enable any organization to explore, test hardware and
applications, perform pilot activities, and develop deployment
scenarios."

If the computer runs Vista Ultimate it has more than enough horse power for Windows 7

I put the beta W7 on an old crappy laptop w/only 512 mb memory and it ran
better than it ever had with XP. So you should have no problem.
Use 32 bit if possible. Your old programs will run better - no 64 bit
conversion needed.
I upgraded my Vista laptop to W7, then put Windows mail on it.
If you Google for "windows mail on windows 7" you can find two files that
you must run before you try to use Windows Mail on W7.
They are named "Windows Mail.reg" and "Windows Mail2.reg".
I assume you know how to point Windows Mail to where your messages live on
your computer. And contacts.
I've been using mine ever since W7 came out.
Good luck,
Paul

You shouldn't have a problem. On the windows site there is a program that
will check your machine as to Win 7 compatibility.

I use Windows Live Mail with my Win7 64 bit.

Thanks to all who responded.
One additional question: Any special backing required from Windows Vista
Ultimate before the upgrade, or just a regular DVD saving of the important
files will suffice?

Windows Easy Transfer...

You might run it and save the file to another disk. Should be on your Vista
install. It is included with Win 7 to read the data file. You can download
it for XP.

have a read...
