How to Fix XP?

Discussion in 'Windows XP' started by Jamie W, Jul 5, 2010.

Apologize in advance for length, but don't even know where to go from here.
Spent last 2 hours on Internet & computer trying to fix.

I was having an issue where Windows was running update & was interrupted,
causing computer to go into a virtual reboot situation. Got wonderful
advice, & was able to boot into computer using UBCD4Win disk.

I can now boot into the computer, and "see" all the files on my computer. I
now need to figure out how to "fix" it so I can boot into my XP without the
disk. Issues I've ran into so far:

    1) found update for XP SP3 that can be downloaded - unfortunately when the
UBCD4 disk runs, it defaults everything to "install" into "X" drive, which
has no space & I continue to get errors that "not enough space to run this
program". I changed defaults in Registry, but requires reboot to maintain,
& the reboot makes it default back to "X" drive.

    2) Tried to run restore from command line - error that SRRSTR.DLL can not
be found. Downloaded file, placed in Windows\system32 folder, (there was
already one there). Still tells me file is missing. All commands seem to
be looking for files in the "X" drive - don't know how to change that back.

    3) Even though I can see all my files, I can not access my network. When I
use Control panel, most functions are not available (you click on "user
settings" for example & nothing happens or you get error that some file is
missing). Under network controls the screen is blank, so I am not able to
    transfer files to another computer.

    4) Computer is reading CD drive to boot from UBCD4 disk, but when putting
in empty disk to write files to, it does not allow. States disk needs to be
formatted, but when right clicking on drive icon, no option for format &
shows disk with zero bytes, but completely "full".

Any help with getting computer back up & running is appreciated. I don't
know what to attempt next. Thanks.

Instead of copying data to a CD, try an external hard drive instead.
Once the data is copied, you might want to consider a Clean Install.

If you want to use UBCD4Win to repair your current Windows XP
installation instead, I suggest posting to this forum:

    How about...

    XP install CD
    Repair console
    fixmbr

Ok, did all 8 steps of the last link - still back to rebooting itself. Did
FixMBR - same thing. At some point hit a key that sent me to a screen where
I could select "stop automatic reboot" which I selected. On next boot I got
    the following blue screen:

A problem has been detected & Windows has been shut down.......
    Technical Info: STOP: 0x0000007F (0x0000000D, 0x00000000, 0x00000000,
    0x00000000)

I See a lot of info on the web in regards to various reasons for this error,
but none seem to apply to this situation. Any suggestions appreciated.

Here are some things you can try, you may need to remove your HD from yor
computer to attach to another computer as a slave drive or and external USB
    drive:

1 - Test your HD for defects and fix if available use Western Digital Diag
    (WinDlg -
    http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=9999&sid=3&lang=en )

2 - If drive is good or repairable then backup your drive to prevent
accidental data loss (Acronis True Image -
    http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119&wdc_lang=en )

3 - Try an over the top install first before a complete clean
install. That will save your programs and data if they haven't been corruped
    also.

4 - If your computer is a major brand like HP or Dell and that may mean that
    you
may have a recovery partition on your drive as well. If it hasn't been
corrupted also you can boot from the partition using the boot menu of the
computer to access the recovery partition and do a complete recovery to
factory defaults from there. This is also why we did the backup, you will
need to copy your data from the backup to your system when you complete the
    recovery.

5 - If no recovery partition then you will need to borrow omeones XP Pro CD
so that you can create a slipstreamed copy with SP3 so that you can
re-install the OS. If you have on your Windows Product Sticker the letters
OEM you will need to borrow a CD from someone with the same brand computer
you have (not model, meaning if yours is a HP then borrow a CD from someone
who also has an HP with OEM on their sticker). This would be the only way
that you can use the procuct license numbers on the Windows sticker on yoru
    computer.

This should help you get on your way to getting your computer working again.

It's probably time to cut your losses and perform a Clean Install. (Or
you could first perform a Repair Install assuming the SP levels match.)

You could also check for hardware issues, such as bad RAM. I doubt
that's your issue, though, since your problem happened immediately after
a power failure during an update.

One last thing you might want to try is reset your CMOS.

    Another Hitch

So I finally gave in and decided to just start from square one - used the XP
Pro disk to reinstall. Got through most of it, to the point where it asked
me for language, etc. Said it needed to reboot, said OK, & now we are back
to a stall. It has the little box that says "Windows is shutting down,
please wait" & has been on that screen for over 30 min. I'm afraid to turn
it off as this is what started the whole problem in the first place, but
don't know what else to do. It does not recognize any keyboard commands,
etc. Any advice welcomed. It's about to go out the window!

Can get it to boot into Windows now, have no sound & can not get connected
to the Internet. Was connected when I used the UBCD4Win disk, so know that
should be working. Have gone through the network setup wizard several times
without success. ANy tips? Getting very frustrated with this whole

Thanks, I did all of that - hard drive shows out as okay, able to boot now
(had to do a complete clean install).

But now I can not connect to Internet to update drivers, & XP. also have no
sound. Was able to get onto Internet when using UBCD4Win, so know it's set
up correctly. Thanks. (Be kind - I'm an old lady just trying to fix her
    daughter's computer!)

What is the make and model of your PC (you may have already told us, but
    if so, I forget)?

You need another PC to download the drivers. Or you could boot off your
UBCD4Win CD and get them that way.

If I remember correctly, you also have a Restoration CD. If so, you can
just use that. Then you will have your drivers. :)

    Re: Doing the HAPPY DANCE!!

Probably not by any skill, but my default luck! I put the UBCD4Win back in,
booted with it to verify I could indeed get on the Internet. While
connected I downloaded (to C:) the SP3 update for XP. Backed out of that,
rebooted back into WinXP, ran update. Then - lightbulb - I have the Gateway
recovery disk, it should have drivers for video/audio - so installed those
from there. Then saw that the device manager still had yellow marks, so
went & just said "update driver" on all of those (some were unidentified).
Lo & behold, something happened that allowed me to get on the Internet, and
then I just ran updates & looked for latest drivers for things. And, even
though you had all this info in the latest past, I had not looked at it
yet - my brain actually kicked in on some of this all by itself! Thanks
    again!

After a clean install, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" so
take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting
the machine to the internet or a local network (i.e., other computers) and
before using a flash drive or SDCard that isn't brand-new or hasn't been
    freshly formatted:

4 steps to help protect your new computer before you go online
    http://www.microsoft.com/security/pypc.aspx

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed now and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
    What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it which could have been reinstalled, but invalid, when you reinstalled
    Windows)?

How is it supposed to connect? Dial up? DSL/cable? LAN? Check the modem
    settings.

Check Network Connections in the Control Panel...got TCP/IP? Is it set to
conform with your ISP's settings? Ethernet card/chip show up OK in Device
    Manager under Network adapters?
