Hibernation - why the slowdown?

C

Charlie+

Flightless Bird
I notice considerable slowdown after even a single hibernation -
this is XPPro SP3, lots of free disk space and plenty RAM, not overclocked
Intel quad.
The slowdown becomes progressively worse with every hibernation on top of
hibernation. It wouldnt be so bad if the slowdown was noticable after say
10 hibernations then a full reboot to correct.
I dont understand the slowdown mechanism - every program is affected it
seems and even scrollbars etc, - is there is anything that can be done to
mitigate the slowdown? Hibernation would be very useful if it could be
relied on.

A downside of hibernation is that over time the system does tend to slow down
because a full XP housekeeping regimen is missed when using hibernate rather
than shutdown.

Not to mention, you have doubled your memory use with each hibernation.
I personally never use hibernation, it is disabled on my machines. My
personal preference.

What do you mean by 'doubled your memory use'? I use hibernate almost always
and never experienced any slowdowns.
I run disk cleanup and defrag once a week.

Hibernation makes a mirror image of your drive, Google it and read.

One more thought, Hibernation is a memory hog, now if one has a massive
memory on their machine that in itself is another thought, just because you
do not experience problems or slowdowns does not mean Joe Blow will not.

It does NOT make an image of your drive. It writes all of memory to disk.
When coming out of hibernation memory
is restored to what it was from the disk. What do you mean 'doubled your
memory use'???

Hibernation does *not* make "a mirror image of your drive," and one
hasn't(as you suggested in an earlier post)"doubled [his] memory use
with each hibernation." Hibernation uses disk space, and that's it.

How on earth can hibernation be a memory hog? Memory is written to the disk.

Hibernation is not a "memory hog." Do you even know what "memory" means

BTW
A file, "hiberfil.sys" is used to store the contents of RAM when the
computer hibernates, and is always the same size as the total RAM.

This is what I speak of.

That's true--so what?. The size of the file on the disk has to be equal to
