It sounds worth checking the files really are still in the place you
expect them - or rather, the place media player thinks they are when
it added them ot the media library,
Find an unplayable file in the media player library, and right-click
it. From the popup menu, choose "Open file location"
Can you see the file in the folder which is shown (or does that folder
even still exist ? Perhaps it was moved in Windows Explorer for
example)
Then right-click the file in WMP, and choose Properties - look at the
Location entry. Make sure it really does end in .mp3 and not .aac or
..m4a, for starters.
If the file has moved, either you have dragged the folder elsewhere
using windows explorer, and WMP hasn't noticed - for example is it
possible the [album] folder was moved to an external hard disk instead
of being in My Music folder ?
Alternatively, "other players" - such as iTunes - may move files to
another location themselves, when they're first installed, and it's
not obvious what it's up to when you frist run the program that it's
going to move files around.
iTunes may also convert files to .aac audio format which needs a
plugin for media player to play it back, unlike MP3 or WMA audio.
