M/S Windows 7 update kb971033 checks & detects a lot of
various types of Pirated or 'Unauthorized' versions . It also reportedly
then
runs constantly to do further such checks.

I have just installed Win 7 64bit & manually started the Online Update
routine for
the first time ...19 'critical' ..& around 22 (Language packs plus one
Device driver). 'recommended updates.
There is no sign of the dread kb971033 has it been dropped or replaced ??
I'm near Paranoid possessive Re. any Prog. Updating itself & check
everything
allowing only really needed updates.

It's only a "dread update" if you are running bogus copies.

"The process exits silently if it detects no validation errors, activation
exploits, or tampered files."
It doesn't keep running if there are no issues, only if there is a problem.
Why would you even worry about it?

Since everyone on this ng stops at every stop sign and doesn't drive
faster than 65 mph on the highway I don't think you'll get much help.
Suffice to say there is plenty of into with a Google search and you
should be able to choose not to install and not be reminded to the update.

I don't know, but my netbook, running Win7 Starter, seems to have never
been presented with that update. I've been watching for it so I could
avoid it but it's never shown up. It's not listed as an installed or
hidden update. Somehow I got skipped.

Yesterday when I started up my laptop (was originally a Vista machine--I
updated it and two other machines with the family three license pack that
came out the first couple of weeks Win7 was available) an error message
popped up stating that this copy of Windows appeared to not be genuine. It
spooked me because I had to install Windows 7 two different times on my
desktop to get it right and so I was afraid that maybe it had counted for
two of the licenses. It asked if I wanted to check now, and I thought,
"what the heck, the worst that could happen is that it would give me a 1-800
number to call and I could explain about the botched installation on one of
the machines. " I checked yes and then it said that the copy of genuine and
went away. Sooo, I would assume that the dreaded update is out there and it
was on my laptop.
