The Washington Post is reporting six tanks on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Yakima Washington are leaking. Almost one third of the US. budget for nuclear cleanup go to this one facility.

The federal government built the Hanford facility at the height of World War II as part of the Manhattan Project to build the atomic bomb. The remote site produced plutonium for the bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, and continued supporting the nation’s nuclear weapons arsenal for years.

We need a better way to handle nuclear waste. Consider the following: we tried to store radioactive material with half life of thousands of years in containers that last a few decades. Next we ask why this is a problem.
