Good intro to Windows 7?

S

I bought /Windows 7 Up and Running/ which was a total waste of money,
and /Windows 7 Annoyances/, which is good but focuses on "trees" to
the exclusion of "forest".

Can someone suggest a good introduction to the "philosophy" of
Windows 7, by which I mean the purpose and best use of the major
features? It wouldn't have to be a printed book; I'd actually prefer
something on the Web.

The two ebooks I read and liked best were Windows 7 In Depth by Que
and Windows 7 Inside Out by Microsoft Press.

The "philosophy" is really just to make Vista into a proper system.
The code base is from Vista but was "cleaned" up.
Quite a bit of help came with the Win7 system and Google is your friend too.

"Windows 7 Inside Out" is by Ed Bott (and two others). Bott's books
are always terrific, and I join you in recommending this one.

Ditto on both of these books each of which is available as an e-book,
e.g. Kindle.

I bought a copy of Windows 7 Visual Quick Tips, by Paul McFedries,
ISBN 978-0-470-52117-5 and like it very much. It's one of those, "A
picture is worth a thousand words" format books but the general layout
is very well set up. I got my copy at the local Barnes & Noble Book
Store. You could probably go to one or to a similar store and loon
this book over before you buy a copy.

Not a direct response to your question but I find the following helpful.

"How-To Geek" <http://www.howtogeek.com/email-subscription/>

I receive a free daily newsletter from "How-To Geek" which occasionally
provides a tip that I find extremely useful.

Also their web page displays all their previous tips.

Robert Cowart and Brian Knittel: /Windows 7 in Depth/
Ed Bott: /Windows 7 Inside Out/
(Both the above got several recommendations.)
