Glary Utilities or Crap Cleaner -- which registry cleaner is saferfor Windows 7 x64?

Does anyone have an opinion about which registry cleaner is safer
on 64-bit Windows 7, Glary Utilities or Crap Cleaner? I've got
both installed, but I'm a little reluctant to run the registry
cleaner part of either program without some confidence that they
won't do damage.

I wouldn't trust *ANY* registry cleaner on my PC, but that's my personal
preference. Though what I do to keep the registry cleared of removed
programs is to use Revo Uninstaller to uninstall software. This program
will run the uninstall program for the software you want to remove, then
performs a scan for any leftover remnants. Once the scan is complete you
are then shown the results where you can determine what is safe to remove.

All the time I had XP I used CC and the registry cleaner too. I have been
scared off by reading here, and don't feel sure enough to be able to choose.
I guess my registry will stay 'mucky' now

I use CrapCleaner on Win7 x64 and run the registry cleaner
once in a while. I've never had any problems with it.
The default setting for the registry cleaner in CrapCleaner
is to offer to backup any registry changes.
If yours does not do this then go to:
Options > Advanced and tick the box 'Show prompt to backup registry issues'.

I've never been convinced there's any reason to run a 'registry
cleaner'.

I used to use a registry cleaner regularly on XP and never had a
problem. But the one I used to use doesn't work on Windows 7 x64,
or at least, I wouldn't trust trying it. CrapCleaner and Glary
Utilities seem to have been updated for x64 systems. I like
keeping my registry free of junk, as part of my general policy to
get rid of as many unnecessary files as possible. The first time I
clean a registry there is always a huge amount of junk that comes
out. But like you, I'm a bit nervous about cleaning the registry
for the first time in Windows 7.

A vote for CrapCleaner, then. This is the first time I've tried
Glary Utilities. It seems like a polished program, but I wanted
some feedback before tying it on something so critical. I will
probably go with CrapCleaner, which I've used before, and will of
course back up the registry. The only trouble with that is, if
your registry is really hosed, will Windows even run to restore
the back up?

I have never been unable to boot after using CCleaner (as has been intimated
by some), but I have had problems with networked programs when I used it a
couple of times on my work computer. There were a couple that had to be
reinstalled locally in order to work again.
I have only had one problem at home with it, and that was on my Win7
notebook. It "broke" my installation of Logitech SetPoint for my Bluetooth
mouse. Keep in mind that I didn't go through each key to see what was being
removed, so I can't blame the program as much as blaming myself. All I had
to do to fix it was restore the keys from the backup that CC creates. Didn't
even need to reboot.
Even though I've never had an unbootable machine, I can honestly say that
I've never seen any verifiable speed or reliability performance either.
Do they do any good? Not that I can see.
Do they do any harm? Yes, in certain instances, and could probably do more
if the user doesn't know or pay attention to what he's doing.

I only use a registry cleaner because I like messing about
in the registry and often do searches within the registry.
So I've convinced myself that the searches would run faster
if there were less junk in there.
I don't think Win7 would allow CrapCleaner to delete any keys
that would completely hose the system.
I don't bother using the backup facility of CrapCleaner because
I use Erunt to do a daily registry backup.

If you read the FAQ it states that it only runs properly with
UAC disabled, but I've found it will run OK with UAC enabled and
run as a task with the correct privileges.

Well, I downloaded the latest version, girded up me loins.. and went for it
<g> After all, I do have my 'mirror' backup. Anyway, it went like a dream)

I ran the registery cleaner (but as Dave said, it can be backed up to the
desktop and I did as I always did) and all is well))

As you will see, in another post, I have done it and all is well I am also
running Win7 64bit

Did you make your system repair disk and a system image disk? I reckon that
ought to cover any scary eventuality.

Anyway, if it 's good enough for Dave, it's good enough for me))

Interesting. I've got Logitech SetPoint running for my wireless
mouse and keyboard. I wouldn't want to mess that up, although I
suppose a reinstall would fix it.

I'm not familiar with Erunt. I read over the FAQ. It doesn't seem
as though Erunt has been optimized for Windows 7 x64 yet. This is
true of so many programs. I'm trying to stick with stuff that has
been specifically written, ore rewritten, for W7 x64.

In view of the problem ST Tom ran into with Logitech SetPoint, I
may just wait for awhile before trying to flush my registry.

Well, like I said, all I had to do was restore the keys that were deleted
using the backup that CCleaner created. Much easier than a reinstallation
since all my settings were restored, also.

CCleaner has been safe so far, but I've seen reported problems using the
Registry Cleaner part of it with W-7.

Windows 2000 had a problem that caused Microsoft to release RegClean (SP4
fixed the problem), and every software company jumped on the idea.
Personally, I wouldn't recommend any of them with W-7.
