Hi. I just frankly need help, period. I am writing this before class and
hope for an answer soon. To begin with, I am not tech savy.

My laptop originally was erased clean and started everything from
stratch by my boyfriend, who is tech savy. It went fine from then. I got
a Windows Pro SP3 from that.

I'm a little fuzzy with the time line, but I assume it went like this:
two weeks later, I installed HP for the printer, my roommate's printer.
And I think the problems started after but I am not sure. But I have
uninstalled HP just in case and am wary of it now. But that didn't make
the problems go away.

I keep getting those two pop ups, and crashing after a while. Freezing
sometimes. Cannot use certain or all icons and such. My hotmail email
wouldn't let me to send hijackthis thing to my boyfriend's best friend
(who is also tech savy) but I went around and used my other email and it
worked. Internet connect is obviously weird. I would get get
"advertisement" popping up in another tab, not frequently though, saying
things like looking for jobs or whatever, those kinds.

There was a time that it was fine, thought I fixed it. I installed
something from the microsoft site meant for these kind of things and it
went well for hours. Left my laptop on, went to class, came back three
hours later, and it's back to square one.

I have also noticed the svchost.exe, from the... Uh, I forgot the name
of that but I pressed ctrl-shift-del for that, and I noticed one
svchost.exe is usually ranking up in 65,xxx k, once found it in the
9x,xxx k, and I don't think that's good?

My boyfriend's friend had been looking at the hijackthis thing and
doesn't see much of what's wrong. He had been helping me for three hours
till I had to go so nothing is solved.

I really hope I can get this resolved, especially the fact that I do
need my laptop back to normal for school.

Please help, it would be appreciated. I hope I posted this in the right
area in the forums.

Oh, also, for the svchost.exe thing, I copied down what the pop up
said: The instruction at "0x77f69584" referenced memory at "0x00000004".
The memory could not5 be "read."

Your report about getting unwanted ads popping up indicates that your
machine has been infected with malware or a virus. Some people would spend a
lot of time trying to identify, then clean the virus. I do not believe in
such measures. Since I need a rock-solid machine, my approach would be like
so:
1. Save all data files, including all EMail files.
2. Re-install Windows onto a freshly formatted disk, using a 20 GByte
primary partition.
3. Re-install all applications.
4. Restore all data to the second partition.
5. Install an imaging program such as Acronis True Image.
6. Create an image file of the System partition.

Since Steps 1 . . 4 require a great deal of time and effort, I always
protect my "investment" by going through Steps 5 and 6. If something goes
wrong in future then I can restore an image in around half an hour, which
compares favourably with the two days you will spend in restoring Windows to
its former glory.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(nother) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer?

Did a Norton or McAfee free-trial come preinstalled on the computer when you
bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)

Nevermind. Got it fixed by that friend noted above. Works perfectly,
better, even. :]
