Yeah, as I thought, it seems like it's the slot / motherboard / solder....

I don't know if this is related or a Red Herring but ....
I have a Compaq Pressario 2800. I purchased the WiFi "Bump" for it.
All was well.
I had to replace my WiFi ROuter and started getting BSOD (running WinXP
Professional).

Tried all of the usual - checked memory replaced Hard Drive Introduced A
PCMCIA Cooler ran it on a notebook cooling pad etc etc etc. It still
would BSOD but then got a string from the error that suggested the WiFI
was to blame. I could not locate any newer drivers for it.
Then Tried a USB Dongle Again BSOD - Did more digging and found the HP
"sort of" acknowledges that their "Bump" will cause BSOD. I tried a
PCMCIA WiFi Card ans I haven't had a BSOD.
However When I re installed WinXP (to try and solve the problem - the
install could not identify it as a Laptop and would not install the
Battery meter & processes).

Eventually I gave up and now have purchased a New Laptop NOT HP and I
won't buy another HP/Compaq! So sad for a company that used to have
really solid products.

Out of five HP desktops, one was a good one and it is 8 years old and it
is still working just fine. It is using a Pentium 4. The other four I
purchased at once from TigerDirect and was sold as refurbish. Normally
refurbish is generally okay since they are tested by a technician.

Although apparently these were not real HP models per se, but spare
parts that HP or somebody else had. As what they came with didn't match
the specs on the HP website (8655c). And the HP Recovery disc had a
totally different model number (97xx something) and not even that one
matched the specs of these machines.

Two of them came with bad DVD drives. One somebody put in the RAM in
backwards and fired the motherboard. I have no idea how they got it
jammed in the socket in backwards. And another one sort of worked. They
all had AMD CPUs.

I got my money back from the one with the fired motherboard. Had to send
it back first of course. TigerDirect sent me two generic DVD drives to
replace the two bad ones. So now I had three of these things.

They came with Windows ME which was problematic right there. Later they
either had Windows 2000 or Windows XP and that was far better. But one
problem never went away. That was playing a video, about every 30 frames
forward, it would back up a frame or two and then forward once again.
and repeat.

They lasted for years this way until I bought a D-Link wireless card for
one. And something on the motherboard went bad. As even the built in
Ethernet stopped working. I foolishly put the D-Link card in another one
and it had taken that motherboard out too. Spent many hours on the phone
with D-Link and they claimed it wasn't their product, but HP problem.

That pretty much ended my use of them. But that one HP model a475c still
runs fine and runs 24/7. It does gets shut off for maintenance every two
weeks. And standby nor hibernation modes never worked. But otherwise no
other problems. Oh the ATI video card did go bad after about 4 years
later. And the DVD burner quit after 6 years. Put a GeForce video card
in there and another burner and it has been running fine ever since.

So no, getting another HP computer would be one of the last makes that
would attract me. But indeed some of them are ok.

Dude, it wasn't after the fact. I read the thread in chronological order and
didn't see the other post until after I posted my reply.

However believe what you will.

How about getting a wireless adaptor? That won't do 300USD.
