Tell you what frankie - one time does not a pattern make. Now, if you'd

here...other than to have your ass kicked by me and others!

Last time I checked, this was an alt usenet newsgroup and I have as much
right to be here as anyone. I've already explained how you can get rid of
me - simply stop the anti-Linux FUD and I won't have anything to reply to
- quite simple isn't it? Even for a pea brain such as yourself.

Yeah - you kick my butt so hard you have to resort to profanity and
personal insults!

Nice attempt at spin...you do not have a legitimate right or reason to
be here. You don't use any MS products and you diss them at ever
opportunity.
Want your ass kicked? Stay here.

We all have our own opinions but this "conversation" is getting ridiculous. Sounds like you have
nothing better to do. If your OS is good enough for you, don't fix it! Everyone can't like the same thing
anyways. Use whatever you're happy with and that is the right (and possibly best if you are used to it)
choice for you. One who just needs extremely basic features and something to type on might even find
DOS good enough for them even if it would be a good idea to try something else. No need? Don't do it.
Simple.

difference....none.

Everyone.. If you see my earlier post, I was being a bit sarcastic to stay neutral between Ubuntu and
Windows 7. Well, I installed and tried Ubuntu 10.04 right now and hoped it would be more suitable for me.
But what I first intended to be sarcasm.... It is no longer sarcasm. I have already found annoyances that
makes me run back to Windows 7 and not even want to bother installing things or tweaking this and that
to get it working as I want it to:
* Right click on an object and the context menu pops up. Right click on another object and it
disappears, but nothing more happens. The idea is probably that you can click anywhere without
interacting with something you did not intend to interact with. But guess what, if I didn't want to, I would
click somewhere else instead!
* Can't figure out where to change the click/drag delay (it probably is somewhere, I hopefully). Tried
"Mouse Preferences" but nothing there. Oh, I messed around with the settings there and there is no
way to undo the changes...
* Still does not look and feel as professional as Windows 7.
* Maybe I can change this, but when I want to change some system settings, I need to re-type the
password... I just want a UAC prompt similar to Windows 7, where I can just press "Yes" or "No".

There is no need to even go on any further because these are such basic things that will annoy me
every single time I am using Ubuntu.

Wanting Ubuntu to be Windows won't happen and that's your problem. With
your attitude, everyone would be better off if you just stick to Windows.

Then if ubuntushitsthebed isn't a good replacement for Windows, why would
you advertise it here?
It isn't, by the way, as I have repeatedly told your dumbass.
It's only useful purpose is that con artist like yourself can pawn it off as
a real OS to unsuspecting victims that are so non-computer literate that
they don't realize they can download that crap all day for free.

J

Jackie

Flightless Bird
Alias.. You may have misunderstood me because I never said such a thing as wanting it to be Windows. I
also don't get what you mean with my "attitude". Those were the opinions of a person who wanted to
use the computer in a productive way without much hassle. If you wanted to enlighten me, your post
certainly does not help at all.

Why choose between one feature and the other? Why not have both? I personally like the UAC promt
better and Ubuntu does not have that option. Windows 7 doesn't have the option for a password promt
either, and that is too bad (really).

About my points on Ubunto... Can I change the behaviour on my first point? Why isn't there a sensible
way to simply undo those changes I mentioned? It did not have that same clean and professional look
no matter which stock themes I tried. The visual is not bad but in my opinion, but it could look better. I
am a perfectionist and I like symmetry.

Microsoft or Apple won't change things or implement things into their OS if they don't want to. "We"
don't really have a say about it in the end. There's a difference here between them and Linux
developers. I would say: Get rid of limitations and I'll consider Ubuntu again in the future.

If you need help with a program, open your terminal and type man <name

This is the attitude I'm talking about. No one owes you jack shit. If
you want it your way, compile your own kernel and distro.

Oh, that's fine. I don't really mind (or care) if you don't care. They are my opinions and you are allowed
to have yours. If you don't feel limited, I am happy for you.
However, I keep getting this feeling that you don't want other people to have an OS better suited for
them, or you just don't care at all. Maybe that is your intention, but I would try to change that attitude
to something more positive and more welcoming. Why do you think there are *so many* different Linux
distros? People saw the need for changes and improvements and then made their own versions.

You didn't say it outright, but what you had said indicated
that you *did* want it to work exactly like Windows, but since
those three things you mentioned don't, it fails.

I'm shocked you *didn't* say you couldn't deal with the
taskbar being on the top of the screen instead the bottom.
(Unless the newest version has it on the bottom by default.)

Why didn't you say the network didn't work, the screen was
stuck @ 800x600, the sound didn't work, it didn't find my
hardware, etc ?

You mean use a computer exactly as you are used to using
Windows.

So in your 1 minute experiment..........

Here's one.....the GNOME desktop (default of Ubuntu) is not as
polished as KDE (default for Kubuntu)........

........of course, I don't think you'd like the KDE desktop
either. It seems as though you can only have App Launchers
*on* the Desktop, and we know how *most* Windows users like to
store almost *everything* directly on the desktop. I
personally have no desktop icons, at all on my Windows box.

I don't know, what is this 'object' you are right-clicking on,
and where is this 'object'.

As I said the KDE desktop is more polished than GNOME, and
also has built in effects, that work extremely well, if you're
into that.

I was of course comparing some basic behaviour to Windows, and I did feel that I needed to do a few
extra steps to do the same things in Ubuntu.

> since those three things you mentioned don't, it fails

It could have more options (not just one or the other). It doesn't "fail" just because it worked
differently. Just saying it needs more options to attract *me*.
And for everyone else, those things mentioned (task bar, network, etc) were examples. I didn't have any
issues like that.
I am not into developing my own personal Linux kernel.

> You mean use a computer exactly as you are used to using Windows.

Please don't get me the wrong way. Ubuntu seems to be fine but it has some annoyances (for me).
These things just happen to work the way I want them to work in Windows 7.

> the GNOME desktop (default of Ubuntu) is not as polished as KDE (default for Kubuntu)

Thank you. I am trying KDE as I am typing this. It is really different and luckily it seems to be a good
difference. For me, at least. While some annoyances seem to have been eliminated by switching to KDE,
a few remain. I'll mention them later in this post.

> of course, I don't think you'd like the KDE desktop either

Why so negative? I am open to good changes and I hope to still have options if I want to change some
behaviour.

> I personally have no desktop icons, at all on my Windows box

I am glad we both can enjoy a tidy desktop. :)

> I don't know, what is this 'object' you are right-clicking on, and where is this 'object'.

I should have elaborated what kind of object this is. Mainly files/icons on the desktop or in the file
explorer.
One annoyance is when opening the context menu for a file and with one click opening the context
meny for a different file (or just open/run it). I could not find a way to do this. You need to click one
time somewhere to close the context menu first, in order to open the context menu for different file.
That is good for many people but I am pretty good with my mouse aim and I am less likely to click on
things I don't mean to click on. One less click here would be good in my case.
Another thing is when you click the mouse button to drag something or select multiple objects. I like to
drag things quickly and because of the long delay before it actually starts dragging, it can click on or drag
something else instead.
I'll be happy if I have just been blind and at least these two annoyances can be removed easily.

> As I said the KDE desktop is more polished than GNOME, and also has built in effects, that work

extremely well, if you're into that.
Thank you. I would personally sacrifice visual effects if allows me to work faster and more practically.
Seems like some visual effects are in place by default in Ubuntu 10.04. It is good to know, however.

Lastly, you quoted what I said at the end but I cannot see that you wrote anything. Just to make you
aware of that.
I do not really have much more to say about this.
