dual display / desktop queer after ie8 install

ie8 upgrade from ie6 has made my dual display setup a bit odd.

Dual display setup is a bit weird to start with, being under control
of ATI Catalyst, but was okay with desktop background image fit to
each screen.

After ie8 install, xp has decided to "tile" the 2 images. ending the
left one on the notebook lcd about 1/4 inch before the actual right
side of the screen.

I don't know any of this has to do with ie8, but that is when it went
a bit odd.

How can I check that my screen resolutions and desktop size still make
sense - that ie8 hasn't screwed something around on me?

I think I remember sometime in the past telling Windows that I want a
desktop that is spread across the 2 screens, but now I can't find
where that might be.

Problem disappeared!

I was trying the changing of various options related to screen
displays, and after several changes in the Toshiba BIOS setup, the ATI
Catalyst display manager, and Windows display properties settings, I
clicked on display 2, unchecked the "extend my Windows desktop onto
this monitor."

Later, when exited the display properties, and rechecked it, the
displays (both) were then working properly, and various artifacts of
improper display, some of which had been hanging around for a while,
all went away?

I don't suppose I will ever know why.
