downgrade license 7 to XP

I was wondering if one can downgrade from windows 7 to windows XP? OR if I
can use my windows 7 license to install XP? From what I was reading on
microsofts site it sounds like you can use a windows 7 OEM license to install
XP (presumably with grabbing a new key or using a VL key). But my
understanding of what I read was that prior to the 18 months or the first
windows 7 service pack you could downgrade to XP and after you could ALSO
downgrade to Vista. Others in my company read it as prior to the 18 months
or the first windows 7 service pack you could downgrade to XP but after you
could ONLY downgrade to vista.
Which (if either) of thses are correct?

It all depends on which version of Windows 7 you bought.

I'd very much doubt it.

Windows Update has nothing to do with upgrading/downgrading Windows. Post

IF you already own the XP license, then sure. But if you don't already own
an XP license, I seriously doubt it. A reread of the EULA is quite clear
about those things. All operating systems AFAIK from MS are
single-installation oriented and never apply to any other version of the OS.

Caveat: Before you try a rollback like that, also make sure you have the
drivers you'll need available, especially those for the chipset for the
motherboard. If it's a new machine, it could be a real bear to back-rev it
because not only is it not made to be back revved, but they often use
hardware that didn't exist during XP's life.

Is Windows 7 that horrible?
I've heard it's better than Vista, but still bad.
Personally I want no part of Win7 or Vista.

Win 7 isn't horrible I rather like it.

Some old/embedded main boards / old hw / old sw might not be supported on 7.

If the main usecase is related to one of the above one might have to
switch back to XP until a service pack is up or till the SW has been
updated.

According to the Microsoft downgrade rights document:
Can I downgrade my OEM version of Windows 7 Professional to Windows XP Professional?
For a limited time of 18 months after the general availability of Windows 7 or the release of a Windows 7 Service Pack, whichever is earlier, the OEM license of Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate will include downgrade rights to Windows XP Professional. After that period the OEM license will enable downgrade rights to Windows Vista Business.

My question was pertaining to the above quote. I am wondering how that is to be read? Is it after SP1/18 months you can ONLY downgrade to Vista Business, or you can ALSO downgrade to Vista Business?

I personally have nothing against 7, it just isn't 100% compatible with my hardware (had to do some nasty hacks to get things working half-decently).
