It's Avira doing it. Solved.

It's an odd one. I stumbled upon a post in the Avira forum that
complained about two dllhost.exe and msdtc.exe showing up in Task
Manager after (during) a full scan.

There was no answer or admittance on Avira's part in the discussion.

I was getting that with no scan going on, but with Avira enabled.
Those items would just pop up in Task Manager and I couldn't figure out
a cause/effect.

I took my registry back a month and they didn't show up in Task Manager.
I did an Avira full scan and noticed they popped up.

That's when I went looking.

They appear to go away on reboot now , but not when I noticed the
problem a few weeks ago.

I surmise something changed in the past month and I've had Avira on for
at least six months.

I have Avira on two other computers with XP Pro and don't have this
issue, but have never run a full Avira scan.

I've installed no new software in the past month or so.

Maybe Avira does that to get into locked files, I have no idea.

I use Avira. I'm curious to see what happens when I run a full scan.
