Well, it doesn't appear on boot anymore, but two instances show up and I
can't pinpoint just what causes it.

Sounds like you have one. :) And I know the feeling.

I know I changed the thread, the other one was pretty messy.

Anyway, I did what your link said (yes, I already had, but did it
again). Thanks

Then I did this to the registry,,

http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5433389

The Java settings in Control Panel didn't have the Update box to uncheck
in version 6u21 - bastards.

They also put Java Update Sched in HKLM Run (according to Startup
Control Panel). No matter what was unchecked in the Java settngs, they
have been doing this for a long time.

Java is starting to piss me off.

As of this writing, no dllhost.exe is showing..........yet.

Hmm, 5 minutes later, they did. I was using Firefox, but didn't go to
any java site I was aware of.

It's there in mine.

Yes, that's been there for years. I'm not convinced that it does
anything, though, if the update option in the Java control panel is
disabled. My firewall logs don't show it contacting anyone. I disable
the Java Update Scheduler every time I update Java.

Do you have Version 1.6.0_21 ?

It's not there.

That would be build 07, since they made a slight change in 1.6.0_21

Version 1.6.0_21-b07.

That is really odd.

My tabs are General-Java-Security-Advanced.

Nothing about updating anywhere.

I installed it offline, though.

A quick google search found me a few references to the same problem,
but no real solutions. It seems to be a bug. I'd try uninstalling java,
then reinstalling.

I thought I'd find something, nothing definitive.

Why not uninstall it? Then see if those instances of dllhost.exe go
away.

Then reinstall it. Then see if the Update tab is where it should be.

Then report back whether or not the dllhost.exe instances return. If so,
note which Web sites you recently visited use Java.

My guess is what was mentioned here is happening:

http://searchtasks.answersthatwork.com:80/tasklist.php?File=DLLHost

"However, sometimes, if a Java COM object runs (this could happen if you
are browsing the Internet and come to a page which has Java code),
DLLHOST may not terminate, which is when you would see it in your Task
List."

That is, it would happen to *anyone* visiting that site (running XP and
IE, presumably).

Well, I am a little nuts about this one.

I don't ever see dllhost.exe in Task Manager on my other two
XP Pro machines.

Malware is always a possibility. Rootkits can be very tricky!

I can't figure it out. I also had msdtc.exe running with the two
dllhost.exe.

I went back to a June 29 ERUNDT backup and it all went away.

If I ever figure it out, I'll post back.

Until then, I appreciate all the suggestions.
