I had to reformat my computer, which set me back to IE6. Now when I try to
upgrade to IE 8, in the process of downloading I get the following message:

"The procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not belocated in the dynamic
link libr"

Can you help with this? Thanks in advance.

Why did you have to "reformat [your] computer"?

Did you actually format the HDD & do a clean install of WinXP or did you do
a Repair Install?

Had you upgraded to IE7 and/or IE8 before you reinstalled Windows?

What anti-virus application or security suite was installed before you
reinstalled Windows and was your subscription still current?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed now and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed ___?

Did a Norton or McAfee free trial come preinstalled on your computer when
you bought it?

==============================

HOW TO solve IE8 installation problems
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949220

No-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage
(only) is available via telephone (based on your locale) and has been
extended until 02 July 2010. Customers must be running Windows XP or Windows
Vista in a non-domain environment.

=> US & CA Residents: 1-866-234-6020
=> Other locales:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?&prid=13043

My personal recommendations include:

=> Install IE8 manually, not via Windows Update/Automatic Updates!! =>
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/worldwide-sites.aspx

NB WinXP users: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it. When
you're prepared to install IE8, double-click on the saved file.

NB Vista users: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it. When
you're prepared to install IE8, right-click on the saved file and select Run
as Administator.

=> Uninstall all third-party toolbars (e.g., Google; Yahoo; Windows Live)
and third-party Windows Themes before installing IE8.

=> Close all open applications (i.e., anything with a taskbar icon) before
installing or uninstalling IE8.

=> I would strongly recommend disabling your anti-virus application and any
anti-spyware application's "system protections" (other than Defender's)
before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. If you're running a
third-party firewall, I would recommend disabling it and then enabling the
Windows Firewall before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade.

NB WinXP users=> Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8, then go
to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any
Critical Security Updates offered (i.e., KB976325). If a Root Certificates
update is listed in the Optional Updates category, install it to take full
advantage of IE's enhanced security.

NB Vista users=> Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8, then
check-in at Windows Update and install any critical security updates
offered.

Hi,

I did a nondestructive recovery and yes, I had upgraded to IE 8 before the
recovery. I had to do this because I got a virus that trashed internet
explorer. I could receive emails to OE, so connection with the internet
wasn't the problem.

Norton came preinstalled, but was out of date, so I removed it and installed
anti malwarebytes and AVG. I didn't install a third-party firewall. I did
have McAfee running in the background when I tried to install IE 8(sorry
about that).

Did you remove Norton by removing from the control panel and then by using
the Norton removal tool? Did you do much the same to remove McAfee? If
not, then you have remnants of both in your system.

By "nondestructive recovery" do you mean a repair installation or do you
mean using system restore? If you used system restore, you may still have
remnants of the malware.

[Sheana, I believe I know you from the OE newsgroups so I'm crossposting to
OE General.]

See...

How to perform a repair installation of Windows XP if a later version of
Internet Explorer is installed
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917964

You should have uninstalled IE8 (and IE7, if applicable) *before* doing the
Repair Install. Since you didn't, your ONLY recourse now is a clean
install! Proceed as follows:

Back-up any personal data (none of which should be considered 100%
trustworthy at this point) then format the HDD & do a clean install of
Windows. Please note that another Repair Install will NOT fix this!

HOW TO do a clean install of WinXP: See
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html#steps and/or Method 1 in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978307

After the clean install, you'll have the equivalent of a "new computer" so
take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting
the machine to the internet or a network and before using a flash drive or
SDCard that isn't brand-new or hasn't been freshly formatted:

Tip: After getting the computer fully-patched, download/install KB971029
manually: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971029

NB: The Norton free-trial that came preinstalled on the computer when you
bought it will be reinstalled (but invalid) when Windows is reinstalled. You
MUST uninstall the free-trial and download/run the Norton Removal Tool
before installing any updates, Windows Service Packs or IE upgrades and
before installing your new anti-virus application (which will require WinXP
SP3 to be installed).

I don't know if a repair installation will remove all remnants of Norton and
McAfee or not. I am inclined to believe that such an installation will
not...

Painful though it may be, a clean install will surely remove the malware,
Norton, and McAfee. In addition, it could easily take less total time.
